i have a 1991 ranger 4x4 and i am planning on doing a 5.0 fi swap. i want to keep it a 5 speed and 4x4. i have heard of people using the m5odr2 out of a f150. i want to know if the shifter will come out in the same spot or do i have so swap top plates with the m5odr1 or with a different year m5odr2? and what transfer case to use? will the transfer case clear a factory standard cab short bed gas tank?

The M5OD out of a V6 97-up F150 has the shifter in the Ranger's location.

Many full size transfer cases have the same 6-bolt pattern although some are clocked differently. The 4x4 version of the 4.2L / M5ODR2 came from the factory with the BW4406 behind it. So that one's a no-brainer for bolt pattern and spline count. Of course, that also means that the factory linkage for the manual 4406 bolts directly to the bosses cast into the 97+ M5ODR2's 4x4 extension housing, eliminating one more hassle.

A possible problem with the 4406 is its large size front-to-rear. In a regular cab truck, there could be clearance issues, especially to the nose of the fuel tank. I'd take careful measurements before deciding to go with this t-case.

Advance Adapters makes a kit to adapt from the F/S 31-spline, 6-bolt pattern to the 25-spline, 5-bolt 1350/1354 pattern. Here's a link but be sure to double check with AA about compatibility to the M5ODR2 before ordering:
