Well, it's been a 'great' couple of weeks, but I'm getting rid of my Ranger

I've only owned it since May 21, but in that time I've had to fix too many things (some of which I knew about when I bought it, some of which the seller deliberately hid) in that time, and every single thing on it was designed as if the engineer was a fan of eating his own excrement. Every nut and bolt is a different size (some metric, some standard) and every nut and bolt is blocked so you can't hardly get a ratchet on it, much less an impact or air-ratchet. And every single thing requires you to take 3 other things off first just to be able to even see the nut/bolt. None of which is a problem on my S10, not to mention my S10 has 130,000 miles (versus 80,000 miles for the ranger) and is 6 years older and hasn't had half the problems.

It's been an educational couple of weeks and I can say with utter certainty that I will never ever buy another Ford again. I don't know whether to have respect for those of you who own Fords and work on them regularly for sticking through all the crap Ford puts you through or to pity you for being too dumb to buy something else.

Anyone interested in buying a 2001 Ranger Edge 2WD with a 3.0L engine and auto tranny with 80,000 miles and nothing wrong (anymore) other than a weak fuel pump check valve (didn't get around to it) in the 'burbs of Chicago pm me.

I wouldn't rate all Fords like that one. We have many different kinds of vehicles in our fleet and The Ford's have the least problems, Rangers included. The Dodges are the last thing i'd buy. The GM products are good too, but if you rate all of them against all of the Ford's, I'd take a Ford first. The bolts are all metric unless someone has been messing with it.

y do u have to put in there

. for one u must not know what ur doing cause on my uncles when i replace something for him all i have to do is remove that one part its called being patient and working around things. if u get the same year s10 u will have the same problems with getting parts out trust me my mom has a 94 and its hard to get parts out it takes time just like any other brand vehicle. all of them have their flaws u just gotta be smart not dumb like ur calling us

I only have experience with 2 Fords (my mom's Windstar was the same way. My dad trained me to be a mechanic on it and it always needed something else done, and it was never an easy job) but that's enough for me. I've got experience with working on a Dodge van, a Jeep Cherokee, an old VW Microbus, a few Cavaliers (ranging from '94-'02), a Malibu, an Impala, and my S10, (my family's vehicles) and all were more reliable (even the '71 Microbus surprisingly) and easier to work on than either Ford I've worked on. Frankly, I'm done with Ford.

I probably shouldn't have called names, but of the vehicles I've worked on (model years ranging from '71-'08) the Fords have been the worst. If you like them, more power to you. I think you've seen what my opinion is of you, but that doesn't really matter. At the end of the day I'm just another random guy from the internets.

what ur opinion of me is wtf are u talking about u have 18 posts here and u are acting like u have been here forever yea i know i have only been here for 6 months but i choose to be here cause i love my bronco 2. ford are the easiest vehicles i have worked on and i have worked on alot of different types but i guess u dont have the patients it takes to work in tight engine compartments.

Lol, you asked why i called you dumb/respectable in your last post. I have plenty of patience to work in tight engine compartments. I'm a professional mechanic for a sandblasting/painting company, and I regularly work on their forklifts and bobcat/skidsteer (for those who don't know, small forklifts and especially bobcats are extremely tightly packed). But I don't have the 'patience' to stick with the manufacturer who deliberately makes life harder than it has to be (through both constant need of work and making that work difficult to accomplish) when there are so many better options.

I have 140,000 miles on mine and other than normal maintenance stuff and the mods I have done to it, I've had to do very little work to it. All the work I have done has been with metric wrenches and find no problem getting to the bolts and nuts. I helps to understand how to work on Fords as you understand how to work on Chevys. Since you are not going to buy another Ford, there is no reason to learn about them.

I have a feeling the previous owner may have changed some things that caused your problems.

I'll agree that Rangers are cramped to work on, as are most modern vehicles, especially compact ones. I'll also concede that I find myself scratching my head and wondering who let these idiot design cars at least once in a 40 hour work week. Usually more.

But I do the same thing working on GM, MOPAR, and just about any other car you can come up with.

I gotta say, I was barely able to get the trans out of my 2001 S-10. It didn't fit. I have never had to tip an engine to such a severe angle to make the trans clear the fire wall.

One other thing I have learn working on cars from all makes and models is that it's like learning a language. Each maker has it's own way of doing things, its own "language" it you will. Gotta get used to it or you get this same reaction.

And the Windstar is NOT a good representation of Ford's design quality.

220,000 miles on my ranger, 480,000 on my FSB

All I can say is...

Well...Pruples....it's been fun.....JESUS loves ya......Bye!

So, you fixed nearly everything that was wrong, and now your selling it? :icon_confused: Doesn't seem like a very good ROI to me; but hey, what do I know. :dunno:

I need to throw in my 2 cents. Can you Do me a favor and list some specific situations where you found something hard to replace/perform maintenance on?

I helped a friend change some spark plugs one time (he had an s10 with a 4.3). one of the drivers side plugs was obscured by the steering shaft and had to be held out of the way to change the plug......never had to do that on a ranger (I've had a 2.3 and 3.0)......never seen anything like that mentioned for the 4.0

I also find it hard to judge an entire companys quality on just two vehicles you have "some" experience with, Both of which you either don't know or have failed to mention the maintenance history of.

Was that ranger driven softly and well maintained until the day you bought it? I doubt it.

My dad use to drive a 1988 Chevy beretta and in order to change the back plugs you have to loosen up the motor mounts and pull the whole thing forward and still barley get them he said he would never do it again. And ford must be doing something right since the tax payers didn’t have to save them!!!! and man get use to it because these cars now a days you can't see the engine!!
