My credo
Its probably better to be self deprecating than self defecating.
Did some frame repair yesterday that needs a plate welded over it. Wondering if I should get myself a can of weld through primer to hit the inside of the plate and the area of the frame that it's gonna cover for some corrosion protection? Or would it not make much of a difference?

There's gonna be 4 holes drilled through the extra plate.. so whatever little gap Is between the plate and the frame isn't gonna be air/water tight.. thus my potential overthinking..

Thoughts?

Nice looking welds! I probably wouldnt bother, but it really cant hurt anything. So long as its painted when youre done, it will last.

Thanks! Sometimes.. very occasionally .. stuff I mess with comes out alright lol.

I thought of a somewhat reasonable solution to my overthinking too shortly after posting the thread..

I'll drill the 2 holes I need in the frame and then clamp the plate where it needs to be.. mark where all 4 holes need to be on the plate.. and then I'll just make those holes large enough to weld around and still fit a washer & nut in. Been looking for a reason to use my step drill bits anyhow lol

I would use weld thru primer. Unless you're welding the full perimeter so no moisture can get in. I had a 54 Chev truck that previous owners lengthened the frame. They stitch welded. In between the welds the rust forced the flanges apart. Looked bad. Eventually the truck got scrapped because rust.

I *believe* Ive figured out how I can get a full perimeter weld on it now.. well see. Hoping I can save the cash a can of weld through costs.. stuff ain't exactly cheap to cover one little spot lol.

I’d probably just perimeter weld and then paint it with a grease/oil mixture…

Weld through primer is only really for instances where you want to protect the material before welding.

i wouldn’t bother. Just do a good job painting when your done.

If you use a stick welder you can bend a curve in the welding rods to weld around corners. Much more convenient then a mig torch.
