After geting my cheap plastic truck tool box stolen, I started looking at those nice dimond plate aluminum boxes to keep my stuff safe. Being a collage student I couldnt afford the hefty price tag on these boxes so i got creative. So i made a trip to the local Army Surplus and picked up this box for 20 bucks and is much heaver made than those aluminum jobs. Then made a trip to the junk yard and grabed a retractable trouble light off a 92' chevy picup and mounted it to the lid added a 12v ciggarete outlet for my air compressor and such, painted it flat black and bolted it to the bed.

way cheaper than a aluminum box and stronger too.

That is awsome!!! Very good idea. Thanks for that, I want to get ride of my plastic box, now i just gotta find a surpluss store, lol.

Looks good. I did the same thing when mine was new and we were towing. Just a cheap box , lower than the bed rails, and bolted to the floor. The contents are almost identical. Never thought of retractable work light though...............

Sorry for bumping this old thread, but anyone have an idea of what this box's purpose was before a truck box? Just want an idea what I should be looking for.

I used an ammo box, they are cheap and water tight.

i love this idea. im going to a wholesale tool place and army surplus this week to try and find something like this. cant believe that was just 20 bucks. hope i can find one that cheap.

anyone have any idea on where to look for one? the army surplus didnt have anything like it.

Do you have Princess Auto in the US? You could order online if your desperate, the shipping will hurt though.

guaranteed they don't have a princess auto their missing out hard. PRINCESS AUTO RULES!!!

never even heard of Princess Auto.

I just looked online... it's similar to harbor freight.

If they're that cheap I might have to go pick one up. Did you just drill holes into the bed to mount it?
