Want to add an intercooler

to my chevy pick up. Whats the rule of thumb on power gain? 1 hp per 10* lower air charge temp?

as you can see there is not enough room to add plumbing for an intercooler here

I either need to reclock this 180* (upper plenum)

or reclock the turbo





which would be the better way to go. If I reclock the plenum it can only go 180* and then the air tube would cover the fuel filter meaning I would have to take it off every time I had to change the fuel filter. no telling what problems I would run into by reclocking the turbo.

then I run into the problem of not having enough room to mount the intercooler anywhere. there is not enough room infront of the radiator because of the over sized radiator, over sized trans cooler, oil cooler, and A/C what ever part is infront of the radiator.

Normally I think hood scoops are gay (because of the obscene amount of mall crawlers around here with non functioning hood scoops. Hodd scoops are fine if they are functional) but I was thinking of mouting the intercooler on top of the plenum with a heat shield and cutting a hole in the hood for the air flow and covering it with a scoop.

any other ideas?

yea, I would recommend a top mount in that situation, maybe look into the factory turbocoupe top mount intercooler or another of similar dimentions if you can not fit one up front.

For the connector, is the plenum just a hollow metal tube? It looks so in that picture, if that is the case I would say to just cut it down as much as you need to in order to fit the connectors on it.

If you could run a front mount or a side mount intercooler I would say possibly clock the turbo to the left and downwards to help point the plumbing towards the intercooler, maybe a verticle with the inlet on the bottom running to the outlet ont he top on the same side and then back over to the plenum, keeping all the intercooler plumbing on one side of the engine bay.

been reading threads all night on this very subject. and the 2 things that keep coming up are a top mount air to air or a water to air which is above my 3rd stage Alzheimer rain can grasp.

I can get air to air coolers from the graveyard cheap enough and I can make my own scoop....... seal it up with some weather stripping and yes...... cut the air tube back about 4 inches, that will give me 8 inches to work with.

maybe you can cut the intake manifold, put a 090 degree elbow on it to make it face the front of the truck, put a 90 degree elbow on the turbo, and use a water to air like this one.
