Truck still drives normal (but i'm not actually still driving it tell i get her fixed)
86 4x4 ranger with 115k (old farm truck) shifts fine, can still spin the tires, has normal power.

Rattle gets louder under power, loudest in 5th gear, like 2x louder then any other time. Rattle is there all the time unless i push the clutch in, then it's gone. you can hear the rattle over normal radio noise.

rattle matches the rpms, more rpms faster the rattle is, less rpms slower rattle.

I put a stick up to my ear and all the parts of the tranny, loudest on the pan bolts.

shifters fills normal when holding it and driving.

throw out or pilot bearing? kind of what i'm thinking.

anyone got any other ideas or have had the same thing?

If it were the throwout bearing, you would feel it the most when the clutch is disengaged.

I would venture to say that it's probably your input shaft bearing. If it were the output shaft bearing, it would be making noise in or out of gear.

Perhaps someone else can help you out more, though.

i'd agree with insane, probably the output shaft bearing, this is the same problem i had with my 88, i'm guessing you have a mitsu 146 tranny? after about 8 months of perfect shifts but still the constant noise, i experienced random loss of gears, and exreme fluid loss. Most likely you will either have to remove the transmission and rebuild it either by yourself or a shop, or buy a rebuilt one.

My friend had a similar problem and it was his tranny to motor bolts were loose causing wierd sounds and vibrations, tightened it back up voila no sounds. Just a suggestion to check.

Three things....

1) bell housing to engine,

2) trans to bell housing (loves to build salts in the bottom portion of the join, causes a tilt in the alignment between them.

3) Input shaft, If trans was run dry or real low on oil, at some point in it's life, I would guess this one.

4) (did I say 3 things, oops) there is a known problem with 5th/reverse, the transmission section of the "tech Library" in this forum has info on it.

As an extra note, what will slowly happen is the input bearing (if this is the problem) will heat the inner housing of the Hyd. Clutch, and one day, you will put your foot to the floor and simply nothing for a clutch... (happened to me).
