Hello everyone,

2001 Ranger 4.0

I'm working on my passenger side valve covers. I was able to see my gasket from the outside on the passenger side and had a nice leak, but not my driver side, so I thought I might have to reseat and retorque... I did and I still have a clear view of that blue gasket. Am I supposed to see it?

Also, how the hell does the coolant system going to the heater core work? I have the heater control valve sitting about 6 inches away from the water pump with no other hose coming from it, so once it closes, there is no flow. Is this correct?

Ford used 2 different models for the heater flow valves

This one with 2 hoses: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/8dYAAOSw~41jikXt/s-l1200.webp

And this one with 4 hoses: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/Q7MAAOSwJppdPaQ5/s-l1200.jpg

They are both there to shut off flow thru the heater core when MAX AC is selected on the Climate Control in the cab, so no radiated heat from the core inside the cab
Neither is used for cab "temp control", they are on or off valves

But they are not interchangeable because both require different "plumbing" for circulation in the main part of cooling system

Thank you Ron, I see its on / off valves. Do you happen to know if -

When its off/closed, there is another direction of flow? Something like it being attached to a T hose. I ask because I'm pretty sure the hoses are placed wrong. Not sure if the guy before me did a a job and put them on incorrectly. The heater doesn't work, I replaced the heater core, put the lines back on and still nothing. The core isn't getting any coolant running through. So I am trying to figure out which way these lines go.

Feel the hoses at the firewall after engine is warmed up, and Climate Control is NOT set as AC MAX

If both hoses are hot then you have flow
If no heat in cab then Blend Door Actuator is broken

There should be an arrow on the side of the valve, it should point towards the hose to heater core
And you can just remove the valve for now, put in a hose coupler as said its just for MAX AC

The heater core does not get any coolant, so both lines are not hot or warm.

Can you post a picture of what you got? Picture is worth a thousand words. Someone might see your picture and know exactly what is going on.

Doesn't sound like it matches my truck for sure. Mine has the 4 port valve and heater works fine.

Unfortunately I already have it taken apart. I was going to try and match someone's configuration with the same valve. I have the valve of the first link Ron posted. I tried to find the cooling system diagram, but it is confusing as hell. Looking online, everyone seems to have different configurations lol. For some reason my valve was located under the pullys, mounted right next to the water pump, and most people have it in front of the heater core. Does anyone happen to have pictures of their hoses coming from the water pump to the lines out of the heater core?

Dad has a 2001 or 2002 4.0L. I'll check under dad's hood next time I'm over there, but I'm pretty certain that he has the same 4 port valve that I do.

Hey, I didn't forget about you. Was over there yesterday, but it was dark before I could look at the truck. It does look like it probably has the same 2 port setup, but with the low light I couldn't really see anything. Even if I had been able to see there was too much stuff in the way to be able to get pictures of it.

Sorry!
