Truck Computer Life Span

Is there such a thing? I don't really here about them going bad that much. I was sitting at sonic this morning and the truck suddenly died on me. It starts just fine but doesn't hold rpm so I have to constantly have my foot on the gas. Took it in and the computer has an internal error. Said it won't take a reading from the tps and said the intake temp was 200 degrees when cold. I was surprised how suddenly and randomly it happened.

Sounds like a dirty connection. Clean the plugs on the PCM before you declare it junk. Most electronics problems can be traced to dirty connections or bad solder joints.

Yeah get some electronic parts cleaner, you can find it at auto zone or such, and if the cpu is broken, I think a new one will run you about $100 bucks.

Why...at his auto parts store of course where he gets this electronic parts cleaner, his 200 hp plug in chip and his laundry cleaned after he poos his pants form extra 200 hp chip....lol.

Well, you can get the electronic parts cleaner at auto zone, I'm sure of, and if you wanted too you could order a cpu from there aswell. Don't have to do that but it's a suggestion. I'll see if I can find it again, but I was looking on the internet at the performance chips and I found a replacement cpu for $100, sure shipping and handling might be expensive. I was wrong actually, it wasn't new, it was salvage. I also didn't account that it was for an 07.

Why are you being an asshole? I said that you can get the parts cleaner there, and you can. But I should have been more specific, I didn't mean you had to get the chip there, and at an auto zone or such, was referring to the internet.

and yes they certainly do have a shelf life and go bad.....capacitors and shit start leaking etc and it goes to shit from there.

Go easy on StrayCat. He may be a bit abrasive but he will never steer you wrong. You newbs of course will have to acquire a taste for his brand of post.

And yes as BobbyWalter said caps and things do start leaking with age and temperature changes. But after over 30 years in the electronics field I have come to know that dirty connectors and bad soldering cause better than 90% of failures.

True some due but not that often, luckily you can replace a bad cap and clean up most connections and problems after some troubleshooting.

I have quickly learned the same thing in the computer field. Especially non-leaded solder, that $hit sucks!
