So I am going down the highway this morning at around 60 mph and suddenly I hear a loud grinding and clunking for a second or two then the truck continued on fine. I get off the highway at the next exit and investigate and found nothing, engine idling good. I proceeded on with my drive and as I was returning back to the highway my truck did it again then it quit and drove fine. I don’t believe it’s an engine related problem,I think it to be a transmission (m5r1) or a driveline issue.any ideas what it could be?clutch setup is new replaced 6 months ago.the noise kind of sounded like a bad grinding bearing

A tranny issue wouldnt cause it to quit.

Unless it was something in the clutch stalling it, but even then you should notice a very severe jerk when it does it...

The truck never stalled. The noise and clunk appears to be coming from the rear of the engine/tranny.clutch is working good, shifting smoothly. Possible vibration on the shifter, seat of the truck, not sure if it’s always been there.

Some rangers came with a vibration dampner on the front of the driveshaft. They are known to fall apart and make a seemingly random horrible noise. IF you have one, I'd check that first.

Next I'd remove the driveshaft, inspect the pinion yoke for play to check for a bad pinion bearing, Then and run the truck without the driveshaft to see if it still makes the noise.

Sorry i misread your first post and thought it died.

Have you checked the u joints/carrier bearing?

You say "rear of engine/tranny area" do you mean the bellhousing (rear of engine) or tailshaft (rear of trans)? And is it 4 or 2 wd?
