ok I am working on a 96 ranger with 3.0 and automatic 4x4 swap old tranny out with junkyard tranny . all bolted up seems like all the gears work sitting on jack stands but don't have any speedometer no lights on and no codes has a new speed sensor that was installed before swap . haven't had it on the road to test yet wanted the speedometer to work first is the speed sensor wired threw the selonoids inside the tranny could one of them be bad from sitting? or is there something else going on here any help would be great thanks in advance.

Here's how to test the sensor.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Disengage the wiring harness connector from the VSS.
  3. Using a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM), measure the resistance (DVOM ohmmeter function) between the sensor terminals. If the resistance is 190-250 ohms, the sensor is okay.

Make sure the gear is there and in good shape on your junkyard transmission also. You will have to peek up in the hole to see it I assume.

In a 1996 4x4 the speed sensor is on the transfer case, reads rear output shaft rotations

2 wire plug-in, VSS sensor generates its own voltage, one wire will read as a Ground, other wire outputs AC volts, 0.5vAC(10mph) to 8vAC(70mph)
The voltage is not whats used, its the AC sine wave pulses that are used for speed signal

If sensor is not working you will get code P0500 after a few minutes of "in gear" and wheels turning
P0500 means Computer is not seeing a speed signal from that sensor
The AC sensor wire is just spliced to go to computer, speedo/odo and cruise(if so equipped)

Speedo/obo share the one speed signal wire, so if one works and the other doesn't then its a cluster issue

mine is 4x4 so the speed sensor is on the transfer case and it worked on the old tranny .i am using the original transfer just can't get the speedo to work now thanks.

haven't got any codes I have had it running long enough that it should have thrown a code but nothing I didn't know if it was wired through any of the internal wiring or not thanks.

I will have to try that because you never know about parts these days. thanks.

Check fuses #11 and #25 in cab fuse box, these power speedometer

Here is an attached diagram of the speed sensor wiring. You can see the output of the speed sensor goes up in the diagram and goes left to the engine computer, goes right to the cruise control, keeps going up and to the left to the GEM module (probably for electric 4x4 stuff) and up to the right to the speedometer.

I think what Ron is saying, if you do not have codes from the engine computer, then it must be getting a speed sensor signal. All this stuff is tied together, if you have cruise and it works that would another verification you do have a speed signal, and your problem may be something wrong with the speedo itself in the cluster. Co-incidences do happen once in awhile.
