Hey fellas. Within the next day or two I'm going to be removing a blown transmission from our company Escape, 3.0, auto, Awd. I've replaced a few transmissions in my time, but I'm curious if anyone has any tips, or advice to offer. I've never done a Awd, so I'm just seeing if maybe someone has some insight..

Thanks in advance:icon_thumby:

Have fun with that. It's less than fun. Hope you have a good lift to work on.

You will need and engine hanger or a pole jack, the engine won't support itself with the trans out.

Oh, also.... Don't bother taking the axle shafts out piece-meal.

It's far easier to take the lower ball joint out, undo the tie-rod end at the knuckle, drop the knuckle off the strut, and take them out together.

When I pulled my drivers side shaft, all I unbolted was the strut on the spindle, and used my floor jack to maneuver the arm where I needed it to be. I don't know if the arm needs to be all the way out to pull the trans though?

The CD4E is a good trans, do you have a lot of miles on it?

You are the man Shane! Thank you. It has 180k on it. The previous owner didn't take care of it at all. It's a great little vehicle though. Thanks for the help!

No problem. I really like my 2006 Escape, it's great on gas and good in snow.

when they were prototyping super chargers on these years ago near watson they basically unbolted most of the stuff and lifted the hoist leaving the whole powertrain and some suspension on the floor(did not get too close to see specifics), seemed similar to a taurus at that time, though having worked on a few since then doing brakes and shafts and struts i know they are not the same.

they dont look to bad really, say verse an awd tempo.....those suck to work on:icon_surprised:

From what I've done on mine, it looked a lot worse than it was. My only complaint was the bolts that hold the caliper on seemed to be right between 2 sizes.....like it needed a half millimeter increment if that makes sense? The brakes had been changed before though, so maybe the PO jacked it up a bit.

you ever pull the trans on your awd tempo? the rustbuckets in this area are a disaster.

No, luckily. To be honest, I've only pulled the trans out of a couple Fox Body Mustangs and 91 Explorer. I only did plugs in a tempo V6, and that was a huge PITA as I recall.

I always said Tempo was short for temporary.

Its either 7mm allen head or 9mm....I know this...just can't remember it right now?!

It's been a few months since I did it, but 9mm rings a bell. It seems like my 9mm was loose in the bolt, and the 10mm wouldn't go in. None of my standards fit snug either. I'll be sure to get a new hardware kit next go around.
