Transmission Question, not sure if its on here at all

My transmission has recently lost a chunk and has seized. I bought another one from craigslist and the guy claims it works and that it has 85k miles on it. The question I have is about the shifter. I can't manually navigate the shifter into any of the gears. the trans has a new slave cylinder attached, but is not attached to the truck, I tried spinning the shaft and it spins freely but it still wont go into any of the gears. I was wondering if this is normal or if its a problem, and if I can maybe piece the two together to make a working transmission... thanks for any advice, I really need it------ p.s.- the reason this strikes me as odd is that I bought a trans a while back that was for a 4cyl. not my 3.0 and it was easily slipping into gear while it was just sitting on the floor... thanks again

it should be able to shift into all gears assuming the shifter was not put in with the trans already in gear, remove the shifter and make sure the shift gates are all centered.

He possibly left the trans in reverse then pulled the shifter. So it would be stuck in reverse. if thats the case, to fix it, pull the shifter tower(3 torx bits) and look to the left of the slot where the shifter slides in. there should be a piece with like a "button" on it. slide this forward and wallah

Ok I removed the shift tower and was observing it, everything looks fine... and I put the shift tower back on and its moving back and forth like its in neutral, but still wont go into any gears... but everything is spinning freely I dont get it.

ok now that im feeling it, it feels as if its not moving left enough (as if its in neutral)... is there any other threads on this topic or pictures I can look at?

2)What engine? 3.0 v6
3)Which transmission? M5OD-R1
4)2wd or 4x4? 2wd

Trans wont go into any gear while sitting on the floor not bolted to anything, has a new slave attached. It seems to be stuck in a neutral position but wont go to the left as far as normal. I am wondering if its totally screwed or if a gear is engaged. and also if it is screwed if i can salvage the parts from the old trans. thnanks

Take a picture from the top of the trans with the tower removed showing the shift rails..
