Transmission problems 99 ranger

Hey everyone,

I have a 99 ranger xlt 3.0 litre in the xlt package. The truck has 171K on it, the transmission now will not go into reverse. I have talked with several shops, and it seems to be a consensus that the transmission will need a rebuild at about $2200-$2500. My question is has anyone had this done, and if so, have you had any more problems with the transmission after it has been refurbished? Thanks for any information. I have also looked into a remanufactured trans, they run about $1950 and up. Is it better to buy one already remanufactured? If so, is there any companies I need to look out for? Thanks again.
 
Auto or manual? What’s the trans code on the door sticker?
 
Sorry, it is an automatic with overdrive. It's the 4R44E transmission if I am not mistaken.
 
All automatics run on ATF Fluid pressure

The clutches and bands(brakes) are activated and held in place by ATF pressure

There is a main ATF pump(front pump) that is driven by the torque converter directly so pump spins at engine RPMs
The pumps high pressure fluid is sent to the Valve body
The valve body directs the fluid to the clutches and bands
In the "old days" balls and springs, and vacuum was used to operate the valves inside the valve body
Since the mid 1980's electric solenoids have been used to operate the valves

Forward "gears" require a minimum if 110psi pressure
Reverse requires 160psi pressure, not a Ford thing, any automatic starts to lose Reverse first when pressure drops

If there is a pressure issue then Reverse is the first to go, which is what you have
Pressure is usually lost in the valve body, failed seals and gaskets
At only 170k miles the pump, sprags, clutches and bands should be OK, usually good for 250-300k

I would be tempted to just do the valve body, which can be done with transmission in the vehicle
And its a fairly safe bet because you still need to do valve body on a full rebuild so not a waste of money on parts

If you decide on a full rebuild, there are a few MUSTS the shop must do
Replace pump with Ford brand only
Replace sprag clutches(one-way clutches),
Replace OD drum
Replace soft parts, clutches and bands
Replace/rebuild valve body
Replace torque converter

Many shops just do soft parts, clutches and bands, so trans will last another 12 to 18 months max, just long enough so no warranty, lol

If you get a "rebuilt" trans get a PARTS LIST of what was changed, it may or may not be true, lol, but at least you asked
