My credo
i think i have some truck on my rust
Hello. today i bought a new transfer case from a 1992 explorer to put in my 91 ranger, as the one it has is currently killing itself. they're both electric shift 1354's. the trouble is, i cant find the intermediate gasket for sealing the transmission where the transfer case bolts on. does anyone have a part number or know if the 7 bolt hole ones i keep finding are useable? TIA.

The part number is: Silicone. I usually use Permatex Ultra Black.

Like snoranger said, there is no gasket. The transfer case gets sealed directly to the transmission with RTV.

There was a gasket from the factory… I just use silicone.

I'd just clean the surface with brake clean and use Motorcraft gray silicone. Cut the heads off a couple of bolts and thread them into the t-case to guide it into place then replace them with bolts after it's secured.
If you really want a gasket in there, get some gasket paper and make one. Cut a hole in the center of a piece of papaer, lay the paper against the face of the extension housing, and gently tap around the edges with a hammer, making sure to do the bolt holes, too. That will imprint on the paper and you can cut it out with scissors and punch the bolt holes with a gasket punch.

Last one I installed got the RTV treatment. Theres a shaft seal on both the trans and the Tcase, so you are only trying to keep the environment out of the area. Good on you for trying to find the right part, but there is no problem using RTV. That said, I use Rockauto quite a bit when ordering lots of parts at once. If I need something quick, I may use their catalog to obtain the PN for the piece that I need, then shop locally (or dare I say, Amazon!).

I went to Rockauto, sorted for a 91 ranger, then typed in "transfer case seal", and three part numbers came up. This link should take you where I was:

The 7 bolt gaskets are the correct one. I also have used RTV, but it comes with a measure of concern. It is a dry environment so no fluid is present in that section however, there is a seep channel that allows fluid from a leaking transmission rear seal or transfercase front seal to indicate with a leak from the seep. RTV will seal the seep channel and potentially hold all the leaked fluid in. Low fluid in either of drive train units could be damaging. I prefer a gasket. Just my opinion. Good luck.

In this application guide bolts shouldn't be necessary since there's a 3" long shaft that slides between the two and at least one alignment pin once you get it close enough...
