Hey there, I am in search of a Toyo Koygo 5 Speed with a 4WD tail housing for my 83' 2.3L 4x4 with a TK4 and I just wanted the extra gear so I can travel to Tennessee and back when I go on leave from the military during holidays/vacation.

Have you considered a Mazda transmission instead?

I thought about suggesting that, but he will have to convert to the internal slave, different flywheel, different clutch. Something to consider though.

Either way there is a shopping list of parts to swap over. Mazda adds a few, but it's much easier to find and stronger.

It would be cheaper for me to find a TK5, which I finally did than switch over to a Mazda. I'd have to get a different transfer case, driveshafts, and probably a ton of other stuff.

By the way, isn't the toyo kogo a Mazda transmission? The later Mazda may be a different trans, but aren't they the same company?

I've always been a little vague on that. There's definitely some relationship between the two. But like you said, the one we typically call the Mazda trans is definitely a whole different animal.

I'm not sure if the TK4 and 5 are the same length or not. If they are then it's an easy swap. If you have to swap around driveshafts anyway, I'd go with the newer trans every time.
