Top engine noise

Help. My 1991 Ranger has a noise coming from the top of the engine. Only doe it when you rev it to about 1500 rpm then you get a loud rattling noise as the engine backs down. Has about 50 lbs. oil pressure. Sounds like it might be in the camshaft area. It is a 2.3 four cylinder. Not a tapping noise but more like a solid sounding rattle. Anyone ever had this problem.

sounds like a hydraulic lash adjuster is toast. try running some marvel mystery oil in it.

Thanks for the reply. I thought it might be that too. I will try thr marvel oil and if it dont free up. I will put a new set of adjusters in it.. I just needed someone to verify what I thought. This is a very valuable website. Thanks

I put in the marvel mystery oil and ran it a while then drove around. Decided to stop at a reputable garage and get their opinion. When the guy raced the engine, the noise was gone. I had let it idle for a good while before he saw it. When I left the shop I ran it on the highway for a while about 60 mph. When I stopped and raced the engine the noise was back. Wondering if the adjusters are losing pressure at highway speed. Maybe they built up pressure while it was idling before the mechanic looked at it. I will drive it a while with the oil in it. Maybe it will go away completely. If not I will try new valve adjusters.
