whats everyones views on useing chains during winter wheeling? i got told ill break axles quicker and stuff.

They help traction but it still won't be like dry ground. I don't see any way they can break axles. That sounds like hillbilly legend to me.

I don't see a problem with it, I use to use chains on my 2WD regularly..

And if you use them only use 4 don't try only 2.

well i understand how it might be possible to put more levrage on the front d28 in my truck,i kno if they have to much slack you could smack the fenders. a friend pointed out that they help the truck start to dig wich may be good in some cases and others bad, he also pointed it out could make a "easy" stuck, a giant stuck quickly.

if you go light, i think you would be ok. if you were digging with chains, you werent going anywhere with out them. but if you get that extra grip and go hard, you might break something, just dont go nuts. imo

The old beat up ford F-350 I used at the ranch I worked at had chains all the way around all year long. No driveline damage at all. The truck was a hunk of turd but was almost impossible to get stuck. We tried, believe me. When we did get it stuck, we just tipped it back over with the tractor and it drove right out.

It depends on the depth of snow you are wheelin on.

I do a lot of winter wheelin in deep snow. The key factor in deep snow is wide tires at low psi to float as much as you can. As soon as you start to dig your stuck. I would never use chains as they would dig way to much and before you know it your laying on your frame and axles with your tires spinning in the holes they made.

Now if you are wheelin on snow that isn’t deeper then the radius of the tires then chains would and do work great.

I use them. They are a PIA to put on but work pretty well if the snow isn't too deep. They work well in the mud as well.

:icon_thumby: Awesome in mud. Also awesome in cow crap mixed in with hay and water. The truck i talked about earlier has had the chains on all year round since '96. Just talked to marvin about it.

they also work wonders on ice. i had to chain the front regularly to get home when i was in alaska. i had a very nice set of quick cable chains (wish i could remember the brand). they rode so well that i could still do 30-40MPH with them on the front and the vibration was comparable to going the same speed down a gravel road.
