Why are the throttle bodies on the 4.0l's (at least the newer 4.0l's) so small inside? My 87 2.9l was a lot bigger. Can I put an 86-87 2.9l throttle body on my 4.0l?

probly because the Engineers at Ford figured that was the size that was needed for the onboard computer to properly meter the airflow into the intake...
I believe that the 4.0 in your truck is completely different than the earlier 4.0's (1999 and older) and that throttle body would probably not work, or if it did, you would not like the results...

Upgrading your throttle body won't really do anything...
