i just rebuilt my engine its a 96 2.3 and i am having trouble getting the timing belt right on. i put it at tdc and line up all the marks and take the slack out but the cam always is a little off the mark when i put the belt on and looks like a tooth off but if i go the other way it looks like it a tooth off the other way. it just wont line up exact to the mark its either off one way or the other i dont know what to do.

I never have changed my timing belt and the only info i have is from what i read here. I am not positive about this but I think i might have heard that you need to spin the cam around once. I am not positive about this just think i might have read it before........

i did a little searching for you. I think that might be your issue. the cam turns twice for every one turn of the crank. I think if you turn the cam 360 degrees the marks will line up.........lets us know what happens..........

yeah i had almost the same problem. turn it over one more time and it should help.
at least it did for me

Did the engines run with the cam being off that far? Im strugling with the same thing right now. But it runs and drives.

it wouldnt that far. if its running like the timing is off, it cant be off by TOO much, or else shouldnt run at all

Frankly you couldn't be off more then a tooth or even half a tooth or it wouldn't do snot but backfire through the breather. Their very picky beasties with timing.

I just repalced a timing belt on my buddies car(97 2.3), and couldnt find a marking on the crank shaft to line up with the diamond shape marking at the top (or maybe the diamond shape marking was suppose to be at the top?)
The oil pump was off a tooth, and while putting my spark plugs back in, broke one, and changed the ignition wires. No its hesitating a second or so when accelerating. Any suggestions?
