Hi. I have a 1995 Ranger 2.3 L which I am changing the timing belt on. I have set the marks on the crank, cam, an oil pulleys to line up, but when I tried to break the BOLT on the Cam, I jumped a tooth (or two)... With this said, I tried to align the marks, which I did, but when I went to start it, I can tell that the timing was indeed off by the tapping sounds it made.. I also spun the crank soto make sure the marks were not 180 degrees out..

After I re-checked the timing and set everything up a second time - same thing... Now, it looks like the cam could be a half tooth off, but there is no way to adjust for a 1/2 tooth is there?

I'm beginning to think the cam is out of time?? If so, can I move the cam pully by itself while the tension is off and adjust?

I appreciate anyone's input into this...

Pictures. Can't really help if we can't see.

Thanks for the reply and excuse the ignorance here, but How do I add a pic to my reply? -Thanks

I see where I can add pics now..I'll be posting some pics soon...

What does it sound like to you by just what I explained? Timing...Can I adjust both cam and oil pulley independently without throwing their time off ?

Been a while...jackshaft....yes...independent.

Crank and cam dots need to be aligned. When they're aligned, rotor in distributor needs to be pointed at number 1 in distributor cap.

Doesn't matter where the jackshaft is. What matters is where the spark happens.

And belt on pulleys...blahblahblah.

Want to say thanks to those who responded to my?...My problem was that I was getting a lot of noise from the cam cover when I did the timing...turns out, that I also changed my oil right befroe the timing belt, and DID NOT start the engine...SO, when I started the engine after the timing belt, I had NO OIL in the valves and they SOUNDED bad..turns out, that they were only loud for the first 20-25 seconds, then the engine smoothed right out.

Hope this helps someone elese in the future! CHEERS!!

Simple solution ftw. :) Thanks for the follow up.

One of the reasons I fill the new oil filter and crank with WOT until the oil pressure needle jumps or light flickers out.

Cranking at wot...why had I never thought of that? Damn genius move! Stealing. ..
