is my thermostat up front by the carb on my truck i wanna make sure i am taking the right part off..

Should be under the water neck. Where you top coolant hose connects.

Yours is probably on the lower radiator hose where it bolts onto the water pump housing. Be careful when removing it the three bolts go all the way through to the bypass hose fitting. if your careful putting it back together you can get the bolts started and not pop the rear housing loose if you you will need to get a gasket for it also or it will more than likely leak. It is a biotch to get at and line the gasket and oring up at the same time it is almost better to pull the power steering pump out of the way first to clean the surfaces good and put it back together.

The easiest way to get at the back of the timing cover is to move everything above it. A/C compressor and power steering pump. You don't have to disconnect the lines just set off to the side and go at it. Get both sides of the timing cover clean enough to eat off of or it will leak... and back there you will be. I thought "to heck with that" the first time and got it as clean as I could with the PS pump still in place... didn't work.

Didn't the early ones have two thermostats? Mine was late enough (midyear '85 sometime was the changeover) that it only had the one in the normal place.

If it has two thermostats it is because the person who didnt know what they were doing. It is either on the upper hose two piece housing or the lower one.

Good to know, I had heard that thrown around before and since I didn't have one I didn't pay a whole lot of attention.
