TBI on my 2.8 liter problem

Im new here and i have a question. My dad and I just put a TBI form a 1984 T-Bird 3.8 liter on his 1984 Ranger 2.8 liter (we got the idea from this websight) and it works great but it seems to be giving to much fuel to the motor. It idles great at first but when you gine it a little throttle it dogs way down and tries to die. The TBI has a fuel regulator on it but I dont think it is able to handle the fuel pressure from a 1991 ford ranger fuel pump which puts out 75-90 psi. Would putting a another fuel regulator help? And were can i find one for a desent price (money is tight right now)?:dunno:

If I'm not mistaken the throttle body injection system actually operates at much lower fuel pressure than traditional port fuel injection, something like 7-10 psi. I'd do a little digging into that and see what your options are if that's the case.
 
Turns out that the factory regulator can handle the pressure but I'm getting to much fuel due to the TBI coming off of a 3.8 liter motor. The motor runs fine for the first five minutes until it warms up and then it runs from 300-500 rpm and runs very rich and when the accelerator is pressed it dies or gets close to doing so. I'm also using the 5 vacuum relay switches (emissions ones), but dont know if they could be the problem or if I can go without them.
 
Try adjusting the fuel pressure on the regulator.

On the very top of the regulator, there will be a plug. You need to pull that off and there will be a hex key screw in there. Make sure you seal the inside of the hex part, as it goes all the way through and will leak if you dont. Back the screw out till it clears up, you may need to put it on a sniffer to get it right.
 
Thanks for the info. but we converted it back to carb. Im putting a 2.8 liter (my dads old motor) in my 83 ranger and might put the TBI on it and try what you said. I have a spare TBI and will see if it has the hex screw. But I have also considered putting the duraspark igintion on my 2.8 (just to get rid of the computer). My truck currently has an 1987 2.3 liter fuel injection motor that i just dont want to mess with (wont idle properly). By the way does anybody know what the screws on the front of the factory 2.8 liter carb. do and what they are suppose to be adjusted to i.e. how many turns in/out they are suppose to be?

I have pictures of it when it was on my dads truck but i cant figure out how to put them on here. Ive read the direction on how but still dont understand them (man do i fell stupid).
 
I'm not a TBI expert, but I think the main advantage of any FI is that the computer and the sensors keep everything in balance.
 
i have been thinking about doing the same conversion on my 85 B2. I did some research and according to Ford, the TBI system on the early-mid Fords was running between 25-40 psi...Hope this helps.
 
If you are going to do the conversion, make sure you label all of the wires and vacuum lines and take alot of pictures before you take the TBI out of the vehicle. My dad and I found this out the hard way (with the vacuum lines for the emissions). But what helped alot was getting the wiring diagram for the TBI from the liberary. Ive decided to try the TBI on my truck scence everything i need is sitting in a box on my garage floor.
