I have a 28 spline 8.8 in my 91' Ranger with only 26,000 miles. I also have a 8.8 28 spline LSD axle I salvaged from my nieghbors 4x4 before he took it to the junkyard. It has had moderate use and over 100,000 miles. I'd like to swap the LSD into my existing 8.8 but I'm wondering if I will have to swap the pinion also? My existing 8.8 has 3.08 gears but the salvaged LSD is missing the axle tag so I'm not sure what it has? I'm looking for an easy means of better traction so I'm debating wether to swap or get a used locker somewhere. Any advise on which direction is easier and more cost effective would be appreciated.

Well, how attached are you to 3.08 gears? Those were pretty rare, 4.0 2wd only.

The best option, in my opinion, is to take the salvaged axle, pull the carrier out, replace the clutches, and put it back in. Then put that axle in your truck.

Depends on what you do with it. If you are running all highway, they probably aren't bad in a truck as light as a Ranger. If you are in town a lot 3.55 or 3.73 would be better.
