Supercharged 302 automatic

My friend recently sold me a supercharged 302 with AOD out of a mustang. My idea is to make an offroad 4x4 with an automatic transmission however sadly I'm somewhat lacking in knowledge of Ford parts interchangeably. I thought about using a Dana 20 with adapter but the adapter is expensive and questionable in offroad conditions. So I'm leaning towards an automatic tranny, transfer case, and axle swap for my project perhaps from a ranger or bronco II. Any insight or suggestions would be appreciated.

Easiest thing by far is a transmission that was born as a 4x4, AND will hold up to the torque that the engine produces.

I'm not sure you'll find much of anything that came in a Ranger, that will hold up for very long to a supercharged 302. Guess it depends how much boost.......

Best bet may be an F150 transmission for a 302 pattern block, and the associated t-case, etc. Oh and probably update to a 31-spline rear axle while you're at it, saves breakage later. Dunno about front, doubt that a Dana 35 would last too long.

Good luck and hope it all works out......

Any idea what it is for an engine and how much power it makes?

What are you wanting to do with a supercharged 5.0 4x4? (trail truck, mud drags, rock crawler etc)

I'm not sure about the exact engine. I can look at the tag after work. I was told with the super it would be just under 400hp. I live up in the mountains and go riding in canyons and steep grades and crevasses. Dirty bike/ atv territory. I wanted there power of a v8 but not oversized/ heavy so I could get through narrow areas but still have get up and go when on a trail/ road.

That's not a bad idea. I have a 31 spline rear diff. Already and will find a complimenting front once I've figured out the transmission and transfer case.

It isn't horsepower you need to worry about, it's torque. See if you can get a number for that.

And where.

A 400hp engine in Iowa won't be 400hp on the side of a mountain in Wyoming. The 'charger might help depending on where it makes its boost but at rough trail speeds (idle +/-) it probably won't be doing a whole lot unless you open it up.

Used hard with bigger tires I think you will find a 31spline 8.8 lacking. If you SAS the front you might as well go D60 and then just get the rear to match.

If it was mine, I would either lose the blower (depending on engine build) or sell it and buy a strong NA engine so you don't have boost coming and going. Being out of a Mustang I see it being set up more for high RPM than normal truck stuff.

@PlumCrazy has a supercharged 4.0, maybe he can chime in on how well they work offroad.

I'm having a hard time locating the engine number. Not sure if it's been painted over or if it doesn't have one. The only number I found was for the Weiland 8011.

Weiand 8011 is just a 4bbl intake, do you have a picture of the engine?

You probably don't want a carb offroading in the mountains...

Engine number? Engines don't have horsepower / torque ratings stamped on the side, generally, and if someone put a blower on it aftermarket, then there's no telling. Cam / pistons / compression ratio / fuel system / boost all will affect the numbers, anyway. So, the best best for info is probably the person who gave it to you.

It might help if you found out what year vehicle the engine came out of, especially if it's a stock engine with a blower, but it sounds an awful lot like someone's project. So basically there's no telling without putting it on a dyno.

I have other carb'd vehicles I run up here but they're tuned for the mountain. But I was thinking about putting a sniper on to help out with that if I can figure out what to throw behind it because like you said HP isn't crap if it doesn't reach the dirt. Then again I may be over complicating my idea. I'll get in touch with my friend and see if he had the specs. I did a little research this afternoon. Would that 302 work on an f150 drive train if I beefed up the diffs?

Depends. Built C4, C6 AOD/4R70... Probably. Not JY pullout type stuff.

M5OD... Probably not.

I am really curious what it has for a supercharger to have that intake.

This is a pic before it was pulled without the super. I just got off work so I'll try to get a daytime pic tomorrow

Sorry about my ignorance. But would this be a possible setup:
302 engine
4R70W transmission
Atlas II transfer case
31 spline 8.8 rear diff(Yukon?)
D30 or D44 front diff?
Tires 33's?(need some clearance but maintain high torque and don't want to be 2 ft off the damn ground)

Hopefully you didn't pay for a Supercharged 5.0... because you don't have one.
