I have a 1999 Ranger 2WD XLT with the 3.0 flex fuel motor. 98K miles. E-85 has been a good price around here compared to regular gas so I started using it. It stalls on starts when you try to start it cold, but if you hit the gas pedal when starting it the second time it stumbles a little and then seems to idle fine. This vehicle no starting issues on Regular gas, but seems to run a little better overall (with a little more power) on E85 (other than the starting issue.) No starting issue with regular gas.
Running on Regular seems to have lower power with the AC on. Running E85 seem to have more power with AC on.
No idle issues when warm.
No check engine light. No codes.
Cleaned IAC. Tested it too. Idle drops to nothing when unpluged. 10.7 ohms resistance on it. No real change before or after. Seems to be working.
New Motorcraft plugs and wires were installed before this.
Did a vacuum test today 14.5-15 was the result. Running the RPM higher would initially drop it slightly and then it would raise and level off at 17 or so.
Sprayed around the engine intake and vacuum connections/lines with some starting fluid - no rise in idle.
Pulled a vacuum on the EGR valve and it tested OK.
I sprayed carb cleaner around the vacuum connections and they all seem fine - no increase in rpm. No obvious vacuum leak.
Where else should I start looking? Vacuum solenoid? EGR pressure feedback sensor?
