Ok, so I've got a 96 ranger with a 2wd 2.3L engine and 5spd tranny. I removed the lower 4 bolts around the bell housing, but I can't get the top two out for the life of me. How did you guys do it? :dunno:

Andrew

remove the shift boot and use a 6 inch extension on a deep socket, you can do it in the cab. it also helps if your crossmember/driveshaft is dropped and lowered, you can reach them from the bottom with about 2 foot of extension. dont forget your 3 starter bolts either. to remove the shifter (if you havent already) take the nut off the pin at the base of the shifter and put it on the other side and tighten. it pulls the pin thru the shifter, easy as cake.

easy operation remove 3bolt starter in tranny +next « rurouni30 exactly operation» ..goood job guy cheak car front mustang mods operation not easy job

My bolts have the heads facing the engine, will that still work? The other thing im having trouble with is the "quick release" hydraulic hose that connects to the slave cylinder, i can't get the sleeve to budge, I'm not sure if im doing it wrong or what?

Andrew

yes works perfectly i bought my truck with a busted trans had to pull mine, pull one at the picknpull, then install in my truck before i could even drive it. i basically pulled two transmissions and installed only one. the quick release on the slave cylinder is a pain, but it works fine. there is a white (clean the hose where it attaches with brake cleaner or something similar so you can see) collar on the fitting, take a screwdriver and push that collar in. while pushing the collar in grab the line and give it a good tug (not at an angle you dont want to break the plastic line) and shell pop right out. if you dont have the white collar on there your in trouble, youll have to find one somewhere. i didnt have one on my truck, was lucky the guy at the ford place helped me out and handed me one.

ey, white collar? Im not seeing one?

Im still having a lot of trouble with those top two bolts. They are starting to round out despite using a combination wrench. Needless to say, the last three bolts have proved extremely frustrating.

andrew

use a 6 point socket do not use 12 point wrenches or sockets they will round out bolts under torque. if your not seeing the collar then you need to find one or the line will not come out.

Ok, thank you
We removed the dip stick today to let us get at the one of the top bolts, and some new swivel adapters for the impact wrench are in order, along with an extension. Hopfully i can get this off tomorrow. I'm also working on a collar for the hydraulic hose. I looked at a friends truck and i'm trying to fabricate a copy.

Andrew

Um, so yea, I bought a bunch of extensions and used the impact wrench, but the damn things still won't break. One is fine, the other two stuck bolts are starting to shear. Do you guys think I can cut these bolts off and still remove the transmission?? How is the best way to do that?

Andrew

i dont recommend breaking them but if its inevitable id recommend and air chisel to shear the bolt head smooth off. that way you have some meat to work with and can use a stud remover to pull the remainder of the bolt out.

go buy some bolt extractors, they kinda look like a socket, but more wave like, and they bite the rounded off bolts, work like a charm. I would try anything and everything before cutting the heads off. to get at the top 2 i used a wrench that was bent at both ends, but you can always just 'modify' one of your wrenches to the right bend to get a stright pull on it. good luck.

I tried a bolt extractor, but we stripped the teeth out of the extractor and couldn't get it to bit the bolt at all. I'm not sure what we did wrong, but that is what happend. Im completely out of ideas for these two stripped bolts.
