Long story short, my starter free-spun and failed to engage on the boat ramp the other day, and some of the other guys hanging around pulled me out of the way, then helped me push-start to get home.
Drive gear looks okay. Flywheel looks okay. Spare junkyard starter fires right up. Looks like the difference between the spare and the failed starter is a c-clip that limits the throw of the starter gear.
My google-fu is failing me today. I can see that this is "a thing", mostly for lawnmowers, but is anyone already familiar with the correct replacement that will fit our starters? Or is this a "grab calipers, get as close as you can on McMaster-Carr" situation?
Thanks.
EDITS: Without popping the clip off the good starter to actually measure the ID, lazy measurements are:
.100 Thick
.620 OD
.410 Shaft Minor Dia.
.465 Shaft Major Dia.
Maybe doubled-up on 97414A655 or 90119A114?
I fished the missing clip out of the starter cavity. It's hard to tell in the pic, but it was a bit deformed.
After bending it slightly back into round, I get uninstalled measurements:
.395 ID
.595 OD
That ID leans towards the smaller McMaster part, but that's also thinner. Basically, I'm not seeing clips this small and this thick simultaneously, which is not great, since this one already failed under load.
Bad starter works with the bad clip reinstalled, so accurate diagnosis, at least. Thanks for cheaping out on parts, Bosch!
