Started my day with a snake

Try putting a loud radio up against the siding where you think it is. Not for the sound, more for the vibrations.

It’s a shame you have to burn that house down now. Do you have a place to stay while it gets rebuilt?

So after working in the yard all day I went in, took a shower, and decided to go out for dinner and look who was waiting for me.

This time it didn't slither off right away. We looked at each other, I told it I thought it should move away from the house and vehicles, but it just laid there.

I got a rake to try to guide it off somewhere else and had decided not to kill it, but I guess I scared it and the damn thing took off for my truck and went up into the front suspension.

UGH.

I started the truck thinking that would get it to leave like it did the car.

No luck.

So I said fawk it, got in the truck, and drove an hour to a restaurant.

I don't know if it fell out, slitheted out in the restaurant parking lot, or what happened to it. Hell, it might still be in there. IDK. 🤷‍♂️

If it reappears I'm probably just going to have to give it a name.

I kept snakes as pets from the age of seven up until I got married. When my albino burmese python unexpectedly died, my now-wife said no more.

Definitely looks like a rat snake of some sort. I've seen corn snakes that dark before.

In my neighborhood, we have black racers which are both harmless and beneficial as they eat all kinds of undesirable things. I have two big ones that I spot regularly on the property. I typically see one out front on or near our walkway and the other in the back yard, often near the pool filter. At first, I thought both were the same snake but was able to walk out front after seeing the backyard snake only to find the front yard snake was in fact there chilling on the front walk in the sun.

I saw both of them today while doing yard work. I occasionally find their skin sheddings around the place. I've seen juvenile black racers here as well, so I think these might be a breeding pair.

We also have pygmy rattlesnakes in the area. I've seen one here and promptly dispatched it. This was back during COVID when they stopped mowing the golf course behind my house. I keep the yard cut low and I also make two passes with the mower outside my fence to keep stuff back.

Stray cats will control snakes. Since the strays around my street moved on, I've been seeing more snakes around, including a young copperhead (venomous snake) that I killed last summer.

A big problem is that certain neighbors are allowing parts of their properties to get overgrown, and one house a few doors away was recently abandoned and also has become overgrown. That attracts critters. Then the critters want to prowl and visit.

Name it Legs.
