Recently had to replace wheel bearings on the front end of my 94 ranger (8.8in 3.73 axle). My driver side must have been bad longer than I thought because the front driver spindle threads are worn at the end. I don't know how I got the old axle nut off but it won't go back on, the new one wont either. The first few threads are smooth on one side.

I have been to every pick and pull within three hours of me that clammed to have at least 4x4 rangers. I mostly found 2x4, wrong 4x4, or already missing spindles. I cant find the correct ones online and don't know what to do any more. I'm out of options and need my truck back.

Any help is apricated.

Is there any way to use a file or dremel to redefine the threads that are smooth? It wouldn't have to be perfect, just enough to help get the nut started.

You're talking about these threads?

jeffs bronco graveyard or oriellys for the spindle.

usually get spicer from oriellys.

You will have better luck finding parts if you know what axle it is. Front is either a Dana 28 or Dana 35. No 8.8" front axle.

With that Said, if there is enough good thread left past the damaged part, a thread file should be helpful. A thread file has teeth at the right spacing fir several different thread pitches. You pick the one that matches and carefully file the threads until they are cleaned up.

it is possible there is a d28 swapped on to it.....though unlikely....jeffs has those too.

i was wondering if the flat part he referred too was the key way part.....i use a baby triangle file for my spindles.

I've used a triangle file many times. But it has the wrong profile. It will knock too much off the peaks before it reaches the bottom of the grooves. Still, much better than nothing and cheaper than new spindles, which I'm getting ready to order for mine due to bad spindle bearing journal surfaces.

There are 8.8 front axles. Just not in Rangers.

Worked perfect, till it didn't. Got the spindle nut started once I redefined the threads. But then the nut would stop. Kept trying to file the threads and still no dice. What could be causing this?

This was the answer. I spent hours, filing. thread on the bolt, it stops, back it of a thread or two file. Rinse and repeat. It's better than new. Thank you for this

ahhh. so you mushroomed the end. we should have had you get real close pics. i would have likely suggested to flap wheel the bad part.

thank you for updating!
