Sadly I found the fuel lines butchered on this 2002 4WD Ranger XLT when passed to me after Dad died. Also I never liked the idea of having to fish out the original fuel filter tucked away up over a cross-member. Fine no doubt for off road driving but if I'm ever off road, if was not intentional.

So I was thinking all fuel filters should be of the spin-on variety when I came upon the WIX 24770/NAPA Gold 4770 filter mounting base. Looking for a good place to mount it under my Ranger, I spotted this bracket. I do not know the function of this under floor bracket but it looked appropriate to me for attaching the filter mounting base.

Then it was a matter of building an additional bracket to attach the filter mounting base to the under floor bracket as such:

I attached the homemade bracket first and then the fuel filter mounting base.

Except for the pain of splicing into the factory vinyl/PVC/nylon fuel lines, installation with the proper fittings was easy enough.

I added the fuel pressure gauge simply because I wanted on and the filter mounting base had one more port than was needed.

WIX technical support was very helpful and recommended this filter:

And then the completed installation which has worked well since September 2021.

Sure, none of this was necessary but what are trucks for anyway!

I’ve kicked around the idea of doing a spin on fuel filter for years. Roughly what was the cost? And how expensive are filters?

thats cool! may do something similar. love the pressure guage idea.

I like it!
That SpinOnFilter looks so much easier to change than stock InLineFilter

If you were going to replace/bypass the original filter, that was located near the gas tank/xfer case, why not put the remote filter base someplace easier to access? I think I would have tried to put it in the engine compartment. You certainly have much more media to filter fuel though. I'm guessing it'll be decades before you need to replace the filter.

Current Amazon prices run $10.66 for the WIX fuel filter and $40.00 for the filter mounting base. The hose fittings are extra. I see that the original Motorcraft fuel filters run for $15 to $20.

I should mention that most fuel pressure gauges do not work accurately when positioned face down. I ended up replacing the cheap Marshall gauge shown in the photo.

Id run a line to inside the fuel filler door & put the guage there. not a lot of room but I think it could be squeezed in there.

never tried but couldn't you use a regular PS60 oil pressure sender on a fuel line and an oil pressure gauge in the cab, I think they are good/rated up to about 80 or 90psi

I just checked the spec on that fuel line... said max working pressure was 50psi.

Yep, best use fuel or hydraulic hose rated 200psi+, the cheap fuel hose will start leaking on you PDQ.

I bet it works fine.
