Spark arrestors

I live in Calif and have been riding dirt-bikes for over 40 years, but had to quit bikes due to a busted up back, so now I plan on doing some easy SUV trailing type stuff.

In Cali, if you ride in a forest or BLM land, state park, etc, you have to have a USFS approved spark arrestor on your bike. If you don't you can't ride and you get a big ticket. I was just wondering if anybody knew what the rules were for wheelers?

I have a 90 Ranger with the 4.0 L V-6 and the stock cats and muffler, but the exhaust's tailpipe is pretty well rusted through, so was thinking of putting on a Flowmaster, etc, and was wondering about getting cited if I don't have some kink of a spark arrestor. Just wondering if wheeler exhaust systems qualify because of the mufflers or cats or if I need to do something extra?

When the police bitched at me because of my motorcycle not having a spark arrestor (stock muffler, I even pointed to the stock mid-muffler which is baffled and he didn't care) all they told me is that there has to be something in the path of the exhaust, even a small screw, so I just ran a screw into the end of the pipe even though I know it won't do jack shit. He then wondered why we had Oregon ORV tags (both tags work in both states) when we live in washington, because we have to register the bikes then pay tax but our bikes have MSO papers instead of titles, more washington red tape and tried to ticket us for that. A flowmaster isn't straight through so you shouldn't have a problem, even then, the cat consumes any flamable gasses anyways, hence why flame throwers don't work on vehicles with cats. On a side note, that cop is a dick, I've pulled out behind his f150 police rig on my road and had to do 75mph to gain on him, and I live on a 50MPH road, I respect cops but this guy is a dick.

AFAIK, there is nothing special for any street-legal vehicle.

Though you might want to be a bit careful about driving and especially parking or standing in high grasses (above the frame) as the cat can get hot enough to light them off.

Yep, know about them cats! I'm a retired police officer and one of my partners was driving through a field looking for some tossed evidence, and every time he stopped he started a small fire 80~

In Cali, on bikes in the old days, we'd just put a screen over the end of the pipe and attach it with hose clamps, and that was legal, then they said it had to be USFS approved, so some company took a screen and put it in a can and charged $40 for it, but it was legal!

So between cats and mufflers I assume I'm OK, but just thought I'd double check.
