Something's wrong with my rearend...video included

Youtube says your video doesn't exist.

Looks like a bunch of play, I think of that as backlash but I may have the wrong term.

If I was seeing correctly, as you turn the shaft from one limit to the other, there is a point in the middle of some resistance it goes thru?

You said you drove 5000 miles like that. Is there any specific symptoms? Does that mean you knew it was like it is now before and have been driving it? Or had you been driving it and its been making some noise for that long and now you just looked into it and find this?

Normally the rotational slop on the diff shows up with jerky/bouncing/bucking feeling at times particularly in lower gears on a manual trans if one isn't smooth on the gas such that it goes from accel to engine braking. It can make effects of letting clutch out too fast worse. The bucking can be so bad as to brake things.

That point of resistance if I saw correctly, I don't know what that is.

I can't really tell you much more, but there are others here far more knowledgeable than a simple hack like me.

Check the lube level. the seal looks dry, but you never know. a certain amount of wear , but as long as the seal isn't leaking... This is a situation where too loose is better than a even a whisker too tight. MY Grand Wags used to take off with a definite clunk as all the lash in the entire driveline took up. If it is a 7.5 replace the whole works with the 8.8. IF it does fail. :D

Mine has had more than that for the last ten years or more. No noise no problem.

About how much mine has. Normal if not slightly worn

Thanks for all the replies guys, I pulled the cover today and everything looked a little worn but no major chunks of metal or anything like that. Fluid was pretty nasty. New fluid and it feels and sounds tons better. Now on to the next problem...axle and wheel bearings all the way around...

Ouch. You have to pull the diff cover to do axle bearings and seals.
