Someone clarify Ranger Transmission ID..

OK, Question is - according to the Tech Library in the Ford Ranger Automatic Transmission Identification , it states "

5R55E D 1997 - 2009 4.0L Rangers (1997-2001 Explorer w/4.0L) 5-Speed 2.47 / 1.87 / 1.47 / 1.00 / 0.75

My Ranger is a 1998 with 4.0 engine code "D" on the door sticker. Does this mean any 5R55E from a 1997-2009 Ranger and 1997-2001 Explorer will fit mine ??

If I remember right you can use a 98-01 trans. Some of the others have different sensors. What's wrong with the one you have?

Well, I'm not really sure what there is about that information that could be considered confusing, but the answer to your question is yes. I would still go 98 and up.

The info from the Tech Library itself isn't confusing but as Dune stated up to a 2001 will work.
The tech info states up to a 2009 will work.
So leaves who's right in your mind ??
I have also read where others state up to a 2001 will work.

Dune, someone installed a 4R ,4speed in this truck before i got it, it wont shift from 2nd now and always searched for 5th gear, it being a 4 speed.

my 1998 has the dipstick mounted on the rear of engine and wifes 2001 has dipstick mounted midway on pass side of engine.
ive not looked at the wiring or how many sensors they both have.
i read the 2001 has 1 more sensor than the 98 and just leave it unplugged.
