Sluggish Ranger


Sounds like a valve issue. From your earlier description of hearing "exhaust in the intake" and the low comp numbers, I'd say it looks like the head might have to come off.
 
Just had another thought. It could be cam followers out of place, either not opening the valves all the way, or not letting them close fully. Fortunately, you can actually check that out by just pulling off the valve cover, which is one of the early steps to pulling the head.
My brother had an 86 2.0L that had a couple cam followers that liked to "roam"....... when they did, it acted much the same as you describe.
 
I'll check that out when I start tearing it apart. How much does a head job usually run for these trucks?
