I'm told my slave cylinder is bad. 1993, 3.0, manual with 70K in great shape. Real trouble getting into gear when its running and often trouble shifting. I had a mechanic bleed the slave and it worked for a week, now the same thing. He said the slave is inside the tranny. Really????? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks Jimmy

Yes, the slave is inside the trans. Yes, it's a pain in the ass.

It is located in the bell housing and the input shaft of the trans actually goes through it so removal/sliding back the transmission is necessary on M5OD equipped Rangers. As a rule of thumb, on this style slave cylinder from ford, when the clutch goes on these replace the slave at the same time because they usually go soon after a new clutch is installed which requires the trans to be at the very least slid back to get the separation need to replace it. While changing the slave you may want to consider a clutch kit as well since you are in there, depending on wear of course.

Great Idea with the rear main, wish the previous owner of my truck thought that way because mine still leaks after he had the clutch done knowing the rear main was leaking. "super sad face"
