Long time no post...
I have an 84 2.3 with a 4spd. W/OD. I am looking for a shifter rebuild kit .. I can find one for the 5 speed is that going to be the same kit?

4 speed with O/D is what would be considered a 5 speed.

So it should be good.

Thanks I kind of thought so.. but wanted to make sure.. I did this on an old AMC I had with an SR 4 transmission a few years back..

Shoot us a link to the shifter rebuilt kit if you can. A lot of those are NLA and have been that way for years... the exception being the M5OD which was in our trucks starting in 1988. That shifter kit will not fit your transmission assuming you have the one that your truck was born with. Just want to make sure you get the right part.

FYI when I hear "4 speed w/ OD" in my mind that means that you have four forward gears - 1, 2, 3 and OD. That is opposed to a "4 speed" where 4th gear is 1:1 and NOT overdrive.

As far as I know only one manual with four forward gears was ever offered in a Ranger and it was the Toyo Kogyo unit in some 83-87 2wd trucks and 83-84 4x4 trucks. It did not have an overdrive gear.

Yes it is a 4 speed with OD. 1,2,3,4,OD.
I order a kit from Rock Auto (part #DOR 917-551) and its the wrong one this kit has the pin's the stop the shifter from slop.. Where My shifter has the little ball that goes into a fitting on a rod the goes into the transmission to shift...

I waited to long to check fit and now Its too late to return. Bummer.. OH WELL..$26 bucks gone..

It was the only kit Rock Auto listed... Does anyone know of the proper part number for what I have..

That's the problem. The part you ordered that doesn't fit is the only one you can still reliably get.

If you REALLY don't wanna pull that transmission, the Core TK4/5 Shifter might work for you.
