Selectable Lockers Front and Rear: Which one first?

Ok... so this might seem like an obvious answer, but I'm curious as to what others think!

If your running selectable lockers (ARB's) in the front and the rear... which would you have activate first... front or rear? ARB sets up their wiring to have the REAR first and the FRONT second... as a safety percaution, the FRONT can't be activated without the REAR! In other words, the FRONT locker is dependent on the REAR locker to be activated before the FRONT can be used!

I'm not entirely sure I like it this way?! :annoyed:

What are your thoughts and opinions?

why would it matter people run normal lockers everyday that are engaged by torque. shouldnt it be 2 different switches one for front one for rear. so you only run the one at a time or both together
 
Yes there are two switches, however in this case, the wiring for the ARB's has it so one has to be engaged before the other can..... meaning you couldn't just run the REAR, turn it off and than run the FRONT... you'd have to run the REAR and the FRONT at the same time, or just the REAR! Essentially, per ARB instruction you could never run just the FRONT with dual ARB's!

or you could swap hoses to swap which locker needed to be on first! Which is the question here! Which would you run first? Or better yet, which do you think would get used more often?

I currently have it set up so the Rear goes first, than the front... however I can never run the front alone!

You actually have them hooked up backwards, the front is supposed to depend on the rear being engaged first.

I didn't like that concept though so I swapped a wire over in the harness (yellow I think? I'll have to check) to constant power so the two switches would then be independent of each other.
 
why not just wire it so you can run it how ever you want?
 
I just looked at my Install booklet... your right Junkie... my post list them backwards!

If you should find out how you did this "override" I'd be interested in knowing it! Would be nice to work either Locker without depending on the other to be engaged!

Shouldn't need to! The harness that comes with the ARB compressor just needs to be altered so both switches have their own power supply!

Essentially the harness has it so Switch 2 draws power only when Switch 1 is activated! I'm just not good with wiring diagrams to figure out which one needs to be changed!
 
Can't you just repin it so switch 2 sources it's power in parallel from the same spot as switch 1?
 
Yeah, that's basically what I did (you have to cut one wire and solder it in with the +12volts going to the other switch). I''ll check and see if I can find my diagram and tell you which wire it was (or maybe I can catch a glimpse of the switch from behind on my truck).
 
so this is kinda like the fog light mod lol i figured there would be a way around it

Rear first is the way to go. Generally it provides better performance VS the front locked by itself, and the rear axle is stronger and can take the abuse. When running front only, you are putting a lot of stress on the front axle by making it do all the work.

I believe the fact that I had a rear locker was the reason I never hurt my D28, the locker was making the rear do all the work.

you make an extremely valid point! I'll most likely leave it along... as I just learned it takes a matter of seconds to make them work independantly from each other!

Doubt I'll ever need the front only, but at least I know how to run it solo if I need to!

Naw, I found mine.

One switch (1st) should have a red wire on it's "side-middle" post and a yellow wire on the post just below it.
The other switch (2nd) should have a yellow wire on the "side-middle" post, and a dark green wire on the one below it.
Remove the yellow wire going to the 2nd sw from where it's spliced into the harness coming from sw 1, and splice it into the red wire on the 1st switch. Both switches should now be powered straight to 12v. and will work independently.
