Need some help here. I have a 1984 Ford Bronco II. Was having issues with my shifter. Mechanic says I need to replace a rubber piece that the ball of the shifter sits into, inside the top of transmission.
Does anyone know what this part is called? Where to find one? Any help would be appreciated!

You need to first ensure what transmission you have. 84 Bronco II should have a TK4 or TK5. But who knows... it may have been swapped for another. It's typically called a shifter rebuild kit.

Take a look ar Core-shifters.com. they have some pictures listed with their shifters that will help you identify what you have. I see they also have shifters in stock for the TK's.

Back in the day people used to use the ball of a Craftsman screwdriver handle for a shifter bushing on those from what I read at fordranger.com but that was over 20 years ago so maybe things have changed?

Yes, my ability to remember stupid useless (to be used on anything I own that is...) facts is odd...

I'm gonna suggest some pics here.

At least one of the transmission from underneath, to identify it.

It is probably the piece of plastic in the pictures below, that I took of an used one I have. If you shift your transmission to neutral and take everything off, you should get to this plastic bushing. If I would hazard a guess, I would guess it is hogged out on the underside where it sits on a cross pin. But, it probably has been ten years since I took one of these transmissions apart for an engine swap, so, take it with $0.02 worth of advice that the wear is on the side you can not see unless you remove the bushing.

Mechanic said this might be it, but he thought they were usually white. Any idea what its called?

No idea since I do not have an exploded diagram for the transmission, but, I did check my build sheet for the vehicle and it had a 2x4 TK5 transmission.

May I suggest putting the transmission in Neutral and removing the 4 bolts and looking yourself? Do be warned, the stuff might fall out. It would not hurt to stick cardboard or your fingers under the shifter while lifting it.

I showed your picture to my mechanic, he said that’s what I’m looking for. Can’t find the damn thing anywhere!

Maybe call or go to a tranny shop and ask them.

You can have mine for $9, the cost of a USPS flat rate box. If it works for you, you can send whatever you wish to one of my favorite charities and we can call it even.
