Replacement cluster for a '96

I need a new cluster and am looking at an '01 EXPLORER SPORT. Anybody used the 4wd cluster in a 2wd truck? Any issues?

If it's like my '95 they're the same. However, between 1997 and 1998 they changed some of the status/warning light wires.

Have you looked at a JY? They're plentiful there. At least down here. Plenty at the local pull-a-part.

Went yesterday they had several. The ones offered were 200+k for $35. Their interchange list said only '96+'97 models exchange. They had an '02 Explorer with a silver cluster, near my mileage. Did not get because I was not ready (tools and $$).

Can the odometers be reset on a Ford? Here it is legal to reset one when replacing the cluster.

Sure they can be, there is an extensive post here on how to. My mileage is way off, low. So anything close will do, since no mileage was reported during sale...

They can be anytime, and can be done legaly also. There are a couple of ways to do it.

If the cluster is driven by a cable and you want to go up in mileage to match yours then disconnect the speedo cable at the trans, place a drill on the end of it and then run the drill at half speed. It will take a bit depending on how much you have to add. If you go full speed you will most likely get "speedometer bounce" which is a clear indicator that the millage has been messed with.

If you want to go down in milage then you have to take it apart and reset it.

If you want to say put a new cluster in that say's 180,568 miles on it and your truck says 205,145 and just want to swap it and not touch anything you will need to take the old cluster to your states DMV and show them the old and new and they will update the record and put a sticker on the door that states the odom was changed. This needs to be done regardless if you are going up or down in milage.

When I changed mine years ago I put a cluster with a tack in my 94 and didn't want to change anything so I just left it. The new cluster shows 60,000 miles lower than mine did at the time, but I will never sell or give the truck to anyone outside the family so it really doesn't matter anyway.

Explorer speedo work in a '96

I found a seat and a speedometer for $85. Speedometer came from 2002 Explorer. The speedometer went in easily. There were different wires, actually seemed like more wires on the 96. Instead of trying to figuring it out I just plugged it in and drove it. All lights and gauges are working fine or better than before. The speedometer is working better. There is still an error because of tires, but it is less. Love the color!

I've thought about it and don't care since I won't be selling it. But mine died at 160k two or three owners back but it was given to my father in law then he gave it to me hasn't worked since before he had it and he put some miles on it. Family members mentioned it restarting at some point, I honestly have no idea but since I don't even know where to start guessing I'll just leave whatever would be on the new one lol. So 160k over a decade back? Any guesses? I'm thinking at least 250,000 maybe more. Lol
