1991 4.0 4*4, slips in D/D2 but runs in 1 or 2 and R. No history, but fluid totally black. Vehicle for 10 km trips on a remote island. Hard to replace vehicle there but if I can get a transmission for it which do I look for, e.g., could it be manual (+ clutch) instead of auto, and does it have to be from a 4*4?

Where do you live? I looked where I live and can get used transmissions for your truck for about $600-$1000.

If not totally screwed getting an A4LD rebuilt would likely be $1500, you should be able to use any auto transmission out of a 4x4 Ranger or Explorer from '91 through '94-95ish with a 4.0L. A manual would be better but would need to be from a 4x4 Explorer or Ranger with a 4.0L from say '91-97ish to keep the speedometer working and you would have to swap out the pedal bracket in the cab behind the dash and do some minor wiring and to keep the CEL from coming on the computer from a early 4.0L manual trans Ranger or Explorer would be needed...

Yes, has to be 4x4 transmission, manual or auto

Your one-way clutch(sprag) has failed, so needs a full tear down to repair

1989-1994 A4LD trans will work, for/from a 4.0l engine and 4WD

Manual trans would be an M5OD-R1, for/from 4.0l engine and 4WD, 1990-2000

Yeah, go with Ron's years, the speedo thing is not an issue since that's in the transfer case... other than the 4.0L started in '91 but as far as I know a A4LD from a 2.9L would work too since it's the same bellhousing, just get a 4.0L torque converter...

Wasn't there a difference internally from the 2.9 to 4.0 A4LD? Number of clutches maybe? Or is that to 700-R4 in Chevys?

Thanks for the helpful replies. I am keeping my eye open for a suitable trans now that I know what to look for.

Being on an island it looks like you would prefer to keep the 4X4, if for no other reason than weekends along the beach. Welcome to TRS btw :)

I think the OD drum was slightly larger for the 4.0l, but 1990-1994 should be the same even in the 2.9l(1990-1992)
