Replace external voltage regulator w/ internal regulated alt?

How many plugs does your alternator have?

I wouldn't count on starter motors being the same, I would check at a local parts store.

I replaced the starter on this truck, once before...and transmission was not a variable...

nothing different about the motor itself, and the ring gear is in the same place on flywheel/flex plate

I found one today...literally, found one.

Its from a early, mid-90's Ford and nearly bolted in...the thru-bolt hole was too small, so I drilled it out, the next size up....the old alternator had threads on the other side, for the tensioner, but this new one lacks it...so I found a longer bolt, nut and washer and thru-bolted that end.

With some wire I found, and a little soldering, I cleanly eliminated that external regulator for a clean unit...130a! Internal fan is nice looking too!

I am currently swapping in a 3G alternator in my 4.0L '91 Ranger. I discovered that the alternator that came off of my '96 351W (F-250) is a 3G version of my current Ranger alternator. The casing is the same exact size and shape. You can also get a 3G alternator for our Rangers in LMC truck. They're probably the same part number as the '96 F-250's with the 351W.
