Since I have to take the stock exhaust off to do my tranny swap, would it be worth it to buy a replacement catback? I can buy a dynomax for pretty cheap vs the replacement stock one. Thing is, not sure if its worth replacing....I don't think there's any holes in the stock kit. Its just ugly, not that anyone really sees it. Are there any real benefits of putting a new exhaust on an aged explorer?

Yeah I would like a better sound, but since everything else involving the exhaust would be staying stock, I just don't know if I can justify the expense.

If it's not broke, why fix it. I'm sure you can find better things to spend the money on.

Yep, sure can find other things to spend the money on, like a cooling system pressure test.

Done with the idea of replacing the exhaust, unless I find a huge hole.

The dynomax catback uses a superturbo muffler very quiet as compared to other performance mufflers. I did not notice any gains, but that was several years ago. Yes to you second question putting a free flow exhaust helps. I did not notice any real gains until I swaped the superturbo muffler for a Thrush glasspack both made by Walker mufflers. It took a little fabing, and worked for a year or so. Now I just run a muffler delete, and even with the muffler delete it is not that loud thanks to the 2 stock cats.
