Trying to remove pitman arm in order to replace steering box. Rented two pitman arm pullers and jaw pullers from Auto Zone and they are all too big. Anyone have any luck removing the pitman arm and what did you use? It is an 89 Ford Ranger. Thanks!

Hammer. Big hammer. Really big hammer. And a torch. And a two jaw puller.

They are a bastard.

Hey i just joind dont realy know how to post but i need help i hav a 1999 ford ranger xlt with a 4.0 v6 and it wont start i herd it was the fule pump so i replaced it it started for 15 seconds and then it died and wont atart agian can anyone help?

Big hammer, bigger hammer, heat, puller, hammer in really big bar (railroad pry bars) with really big hammer, could not get ours out.

I ended up pulling the steering gear, put the gear in the vice, then pounded wedges in to get it off.

Do yourself or the next guy a favor, put some anti-seize on the spline when you put it back together.

I used a pitman arm puller. Worked perfectly. I couldn't imagine not having it. I did however use a pitman arm fork and smacked it with my hammer to try and loosen it.

Why exactly would you need a hammer for a pitman arm?

The only Pitman arm I removed was on an old Willys. I used a pitman arm puller. I cranked the puller tight. It didn't pop until I beat on the side of the arm with a hammer to shock it. The puller tensions, The hammer pops.:D

I could not do it with a puller, hammer or anything else I could think of. Pulled the steering gear and took it to a frame/axle shop. They got it off in about 5 seconds for 7 bucks.

Should have done that from the start!!

^^^That's using your noodle! But I get in a frame of mind that no inanimate object is going to beat me, and I keep at it until I win.....most times.....usually....well, in my head I win :icon_twisted:

Drop pitman arm. I removed the drag link by hitting the end of the arm [where the hammer is] with two hammers at the same time, four not that hard hits and it dropped out.

To remove the arm from the box, like someone mentioned, putting the arm under tension with a remover tool and, if I have to, slapping the arm with a hammer has always worked for me. You have to hit beside where the shaft goes thru the arm.

Great picture! 'Zactly how I've been doing it for ages. :D

I posted recently about my Pitman woes on my thread. The puller wouldn't fit so I ground down a bit on the bottom to slide it between the arm and the steering box. Then I put a metric butt-ton of pressure on it and killed it with fire. The resounding "ping" in my garage was music to my ears

A pitman arm is a car part. More important to working on cars than having the right sized wrench, a good ratchet, or even a clue as to what is wrong or you are doing is having a big-ass hammer.

Especially if you are working on steering or suspension.

Yep, A BFH [big fukcing hammer] is a necessity! A little overkill, but I took a 10lb sledge with a broken handle and put a regular hammer handle on it. Kind of like Thor's hammer....nothing stands up to it. A 3lb mini-sledge does good for most jobs.

Try using some ACDelco Rust Penetrant and Inhibitor for lubrication. This stuff i live by for rusted or seized parts. Its never steered me wrong. And a pitman arm puller should work, thats what i used for mine. Get yourself a 3ibs. mini sledge as well to smack the pitman arm on the side as well, as if you were removing a tie rod end from a steering knuckle.

Thanks I had absolutely no idea. I'll remember next time I remove any steering or suspension parts I'll go ahead and grab my hammer and bang the shit out of it like a retarded monkey.

Hagan don't bash it, adsm really hit it on the head. :)
