Removing ECM and wiring

Just pulled the 4.0 out of a '92 Explorer to swap out the 2.9 in my '92 Ranger. As I understand I need all the underhood wiring and the ECM. The ECM had a black plastic cover over the plug with 4 tabs that I removed, now does the plug slide right out of the ECM or are there other tabs I'm not seeing? Once I have it unplugged how do I get the wiring through the firewall?

You have to undo the 10mm bolt in the middle of that connector. That is what holds the plug together, that plastic cover is just a stress relief.

The you have to get the grommet unseated, I usually use a screw driver to push around the edges. Once you have that done it you just gotta feed the wires back through. It helps to have a second person to keep some tension on it.

You know Explorer wiring isn't plug and play to a Ranger, right?

Thanks for the info. There seems to be varying degrees of wiring changes required in the several swap tech articles based on years, model etc.. I'm expecting the worst, and this Explorer is going to the boneyard next week (after the fire dept. does and extrication drill using it) so I'm trying to grab everything I might need. I won't have time to do the swap for at least a month after that.

I'm beginning to think it might be easier to just buy new heads for the 2.9.

Where are you? I have a whole 2.9 for sale. Low mile rebuild with new heads.
