i have an 01 ford ranger xlt 4.0 engine. i keep getting a p0455 and a p0457 code. when i fill up it pumps like 10 or 20 cents and shuts the pump off. i completely removed the evap system and still can not fuel up. any ideas what could cause this?

do you have a vent for your tank? not the evap canister, a vent that hooks to the fuel filler tube? maybe that is clogged?

Welcome to TRS :)

I am showing this type of Filler for 2001 Ranger: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/xgsAAOSwa8Jf88S7/s-l1200.webp

The larger tube is where the gas goes in
The smaller tube is where the air comes out, if air can't get out gas can't go in
Some air will come out the EVAP system, but if its blocked you should still be able to fill tank at a good speed

There is a "rubber" hose on the end of each tube where it connects to the gas tank
Either the larger rubber hose is kinked so gas can't flow IN
OR
The smaller Vent hose is kinked or blocked so air can't flow OUT

With gas cap off look at the Vent hole(s) around the larger hole where gas nozzle goes in, see if its open

Go under the Ranger see if you can feel the rubber hoses for kinks

P0455 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (gross leak)
This means when driving the EVAP system can not get gas tank to show negative pressure
EVAP system uses engine vacuum to apply negative pressure to the gas tank to suck out gas fumes when driving and gas in the tank is sloshing around
Code means there is an air leak in the EVAP system somewhere
Could be vent hose has cracked and blocked air flow OUT, or Bugs have built nests in the broken hose

But this code, or P0457, would not effect filling the tank, for sure

There could be something blocking the vent tube/hose as well. While not common, people have found bugs stuck in the vent.

The more common thing that happens, one of the fill vent hoses has come loose or is missing. The fill vent system (which is different from the evap system as mentioned) besides letting a large volume of air out of the tank when filling, it also keeps this air away from the fuel going in. If the air gets into the stream of fuel, you will get splashing and gulping, which will cause fuel to splash up into the fill nozzle at the station and keep cutting it off.

i replaced the filler neck and found a loose vacuum hose one the purge valve. it threw a p0442 code after i fixed the loose vacuum line which is a small leak in the evap. there are no kinks in the line but i ordered a new filler hose i'm going to take the bed off when it gets here. anything eles i should check while i have the bed off? i also blew compressed air thru the evap and filler lines. sitll didnt fix the fuel up problem

Not sure what your truck was equipped with. But it will have something to separate the fuel from the gas station going in, from the air coming out of the tank.

The older f150's had a small hose inside the large filler hose. Fuel went down the large filler hose, while air came out the smaller plastic hose inside. This didn't work that great and around 1987 they changed it, and have the fuel going down a smaller rubber hose in the middle, and the air comes up the larger rubber filler hose.

My Tahoe has a large metal nipple on the tank for the filler hose, and beside it has a smaller metal nipple for a smaller rubber hose. This smaller hose is for the air escaping the tank when filling, and it goes to another metal nipple up near the top of the filler neck. So when the station gun is inserted, it goes past the air escape hose. fuel goes down the large hose, and air escapes up the smaller hose which is above the station gun.

See the theme of all the above different vehicles? You have to keep the air away from the fuel. You need to figure out how they did it on your truck. You can't just squirt fuel in from the station gun into a single pipe and expect it to work.

it does have a smaller hose that runs beside the larger hose i thought this might be the problem but i blew it out with compressed air to clear it. also i have put the pump all the way in and pulled almost completely out it makes no difference still will not fuel up. it is a 2001 ranger 4x4 xlt 4 door with the 4.0

yes this is the filler neck. nether of the hoses are kinked and i cleared the smaller line with compressed air also the evap line. no change. do you know if there is a valve between the rubber filler hose and the tank? and if this could be the problem?

SOLVED! there is some kind of float valve where the filler hose goes into the tank. i pushed it down it felt crusty. i sprayed some pb blaster and worked it up and down. i got it free working and put everything back together filled up with no problems. thanks for everybody's help.

That's the float for your gas gauge, most likely. The assembly includes the fuel pump, float and a filter at the bottom.
