Are rebuilt power steering pumps not made well? Whats the chances of getting a bad one?
I installed one a few weeks and noticed it had exactly the same defects as my old one. Sometimes screetches breifly at start-up and whines loudly when turning. Not a big deal but it gets really cold here in Manitoba and I'm assuming that when it does it's probably going to screetch like hell like my old one in did whens it drops to -25C.
The guy at Partsource told me that they are supposed to be like this and the loud high pitched screetching is normal. I find this hard to believe because my original pump was noise free and worked awsome for 12 years untill last year. It was a little winey in cold weather but never screetched like a devil untill last year.
My only hope is that I got a bad pump? :dunno:

LOL....no PS pump is designed to screech. BTW....have you considered that your belt tensioner and/or may be bad? I have seen a lot of ford pumps whine all the time, but not screech. If the belt and tensioner are definitely good I might consider taking that pump off and going back for another one.

it has a automatic tensioner, I believe it locks in only one position so I don't think it would be the problem the belt is fairly new

First off. Did you get all the air out of the lines when you installed the new pump? It takes forever to get it all (took me an hour of lock to lock, not kidding.) Whining when turning could be caused by this, or a bad pump.

Screeching is not normal, unless it is real cold out and then only briefly. I'm not sure what amount of tension should be in serpentine belts like yours, but the v-belts on mine are supposed to have a little less than half an inch of play. More than that makes them sing like crazy or flip over sideways.

Try some belt dressing, too.

had this same problem when replacing one on my old ranger. went through 2 pumps before I got a good one. also it is very important to make sure you don't have any kinks in the lines and that you bleed the pump properly or else they WILL fail quickly. Seems like all the aftermarket stuff is junk. after replacing the pump I replaced the return line, which leaked right out of the box. real quality stuff at carquest and kraigens...

I believe I got all air out, I did the lock to lock, but that shouldn't cause the screach noise I dont think. If I have an automatic tensioner I would think that I would not have to worry about the tension. It feels good, not to tight or loose.

I think I'm just going to head over to partsource and ask for another pump. It gives me the shivers to think I might here this noise again after installing a second rebuilt pump. so much work for nothing

I think I'm kink free, everything looks properly routed from what I can see. Not sure I get you with return line leaking out of the box. My pump just had a male plastic tube that inserts into the return hose in the vehicle.
There was some oil in the pump that I drained out, not sure if I was supposed to.

The tensioner is a spring loaded OEM ford tensioner? They do go bad (lose tension). If I put a normal combination wrench on mine, it's a bit painful to keep it compressed long enough to put the belt on.

I have read you have to vacuum bleed the ford power steering pumps ... not common knowledge.

I just had a reman put on my truck... still whines, no screeching though. The morons who put it on couldn't get all of the air out, so when I took it out of the shop I got the frothy color to the fluid....Also, the new one on my truck takes P/S fluid now, not ATF.

You have to very carefully bleed those pumps. If you don't bleed them slowly and completely(WITH THE ENGINE OFF), and you go to start the engine, the pump will scorch and make noise all over again.

I got tired of this BS, and swapped in a Saginaw pump.

My current Ranger had power steering...I removed it and swapped in the box from my other ranger...standard all the way...

Tensioner it may very well be. I think my is seized, hope thats the problem, but if so, I may have changed my pump for nothing
