Rear speakers for standard cab

I have an 04 standard cab Ranger. Only has front speakers. The rears have a grill with no speaker inside. I think these are for 6x8, right?

Anyway, I wonder if I can improve bass by adding rear speakers there. I don't need window rattling bass, just better than the door speakers. I can't commit any room for external speakers because I use the room behind the seats for storing other things.

yes 5x7 or 6x8 is the stock size back there. but you have to run your own speaker wires cause there arent any run from the factory.

but if i could make a suggestion, get really nice front speakers and maybe an amp for the fronts and it will sound way better and have plenty of bass.

what kind of stereo do you have and what kind of front speakers do you have?

yeah, givin the positioning of the rear speakers your not goinng to be hearing alot out of them anyways. you could just get a small sub for the bass... or as mentioned by blackwidow nice speakers up front with an amp (which you should do anyways). I have the 4 door ex cab and i added just front speakers to see how they sounded and they were awesome so i got some for the back... I can't really tell I added anything in the back because all the sound seems to be from up front. A guy in the back can tell though. lol

he says he cant commit any room for a sub and or any other speakers, but good quality speakers up front will help, but i dont see any point in not having speakers in the rear if you have the factory space for them, and the factory radio should have 2 open channels you just have to run your own wires back there and thats realativly easy, i have the ext cab, i can tell i have speakers all around, but when i have some one in the back, they cant hear a word thats said up front. so i have to turn it down low.

but 4 good speakers all the way around will have more bass than just 2 up front. simple math 4>2

i have these pioneers... they were like 60 bucks at walmart and they are fantastical!

Its kinda retarted that they just left the speakers AND wiring out even thought they already had harnesses for it... wow they saved a whole dollar on wire.

The speakers in the back are more filler speakers... you can leave stock speakers in the back and as long as some sound is coming from them it gives the full body sound but I wouldn't put high quality ones back down there your not gonna hear them that clearly at all..

I just did this in my 07 which should be the same as your 04.
I replaced my radio with a high power unit and added Pioneer Premier 6x8's in all 4 corners.
My rear speaker openings were set up for 6x8's just like the doors but I had to run wires back there(no big deal).
Adding speakers to the back will add a little bass but not as much as you would think. The enclosures back there are terrible and don't produce as much bass as the doors.
The high end coming from the back is completely muted by the seats so any midrange or highs just go to waste.
If I were to do it over again I'd save the money I spent on rear speakers and buy a small powered subwoofer for the behind the seat or nothing at all.
I'm curious if I cut out the area where the factory rear speakers go and put the 6x8's in 6x9 boxes would it be an improvement...
Anybody done this already?
I like to store stuff behind the seat too so I don't want to use up all the room.

ive got cheap lightning audio speakers all the way around and i can tell theyre there, but i agree that there isnt much bass emitted from them. i had thought about bending up some sheetmetal boxes (seal them with silicone and then put dynamat inside so they dont vibrate) to rivet behind the rear speakers so that they would act as boxes, but i never got around to it. im currently working on cutting a hole in the jump seat behind the drivers seat and building a box with the appropriate cubic feet for my 8" sub to fill out the sound spectrum of my stereo. my seat is back so far when i drive that no one can sit in it anyways, so i might as well make use of that space right?

So you think I would be better off to put better speakers in the doors and move the factories to the back? I would rather not spend for 4 speakers if the rear ones won't add much to the sound other than perhaps better stereo imaging.

I have the factory AM/FM radio I don't really crank it up much (getting old, I guess). Just hoping for some improvement to the sound. I did notice that there is no wiring to the rear. I hope the stock radio has output for the rear speakers.

HIGHLY disagree with that. The speakers are what affect the sound the most. After all, that's what actually makes the sound. The single best upgrade you can make to improve sound quality is new speakers. I just replaced the speakers in my uncle's Jeep and my sister's Saturn. Both vehicles have the stock head units. Replacing the speakers made a night and day difference in both of them.

My factory AM/FM radio didn't have rear speaker outputs.
The problem with changing head units and speakers at different times is you want the speakers to match to amp's output.
If you put high powered speakers on a stock head unit you may not have enough power to push them.
If you get lower wattage speakers that are more efficient with your headunit then decide to change the head unit later you may have to upgrade the speakers too.
I'm assuming you just want a good radio and speakers and you're not looking to run amps and subs and whatnot.
From my personal experience, a high powered head unit claiming 50W X 4matched with speakers that claim 50W RMS work real well for a very basic setup.
The radio's 50 X 4 is actually peak power output so you should not have to worry about overpowering the speakers.

Those are pretty good... But I LOVE these. You can get them cheaper elsewhere but I absolutly stand behind these.
They are quite possibly the best speakers I have ever heard. even without an amp or anything and turned up to max there is no distortion, the filter on my radio is set at 125hz to keep the bass down enough to stop the door rattling, I thought my doors were gonna just fall off.

You can get a set of component speakers and a small amp, that you can stow away anywhere for cheaper than those Poineer full ranges. Just takes a little searching. You'll be able to mount the tweeters so you get crisp clear sound, and the mids will give you plenty of bass if you don't want to run a sub. And you could keep your stock deck and have the option of upgrading it in the future without making your other purchases obsolete or unusable. You really might as well not even run rear speakers, especially with a set of components.

sorry bro, i understand your trying to help out. but a BOSS amp??

those things arent even worth the scrap metal. they are absolute garbage.

i dont care what other people have thought, boss, lanzar, jensen, sony, pyle, pyramid, sound storm, dual, any of those knock off brands are absolutely crap.

anyway. the o.p wont see the biggest difference in his sound quality without getting a better rado first.

i dont care what everyone else says, yes the sound will be more accurate with better speakers, but your just fooling yourself. the factory unit will never produce a clean crisp sound.

so if the O.P wants good bass, and clear sound. a new headunit and some nice 6x8's will be all you need up front.
