We're here. Give us a chance to wake up. The forum is most active in the evenings after people get home from work, but before bedtime.is there anybody out there?
He said " after the seal is installed". So, still not sure. I believe I once replaced a seal that came with an inner sleeve to aid in installation. If that's what he's talking about, then, yes, it needs to be removed. However, if he also installed a repair sleeve due to scarring, then that should remain. We need pictures and better description of what has been done. Are you talking about the repair sleeve if the crank is scarred from the rear main seal leaking? If it’s not scarred there’s no reason to work the repair sleeve off. If you’re talking part of the seal or the garter spring, that has to come out. Be careful putting the new one in, I’ve heard of packing some grease around the garter spring to help make sure it doesn’t come out during pounding the seal in.
If that’s a 4.0 factory seal and you used the proper installation tool do not remove it . That seal can be used on 2.8 , 2.9 and 4.0 . I think CR makes one also .just trying to find out weather to remove the steel center ring after the seal is installed using the proper seal installer
