so i'm buyin a 1997 ford explore motor tomorrow... its a 4.0 and theres about 110K on it he said. im gettin it for 180 because he said its killin him lookin at it in the corner of the shop....

now i have a 84 ranger with a 2.8 carb in it...

i tried readin the swap thing in the Tech Libray but i didnt understand a single thing they were saying...
i understood the one motor mount had to be moved... and the fuel system needs some work. i also still need a ECU yet because he has the harness yet...

any one have a link for a high output fuel pump?

im really new to workin on trucks and new to the fourms... any other tips..

I am not quite sure what you are asking.......

you want to put a 4.0L from a 97 explorer into an 84 ranger. did I get that right?

Is the engine a pushrod V6 or a SOHC? (if its SOHC it will say 4.0L SOHC on the plastic splash guard on top of the intake)

If you're very new to working on vehicles, this does not sound like the place to start (especially if it's a 97).

If you are trying to take a fully computerized controlled engine and stuffing it into a vehicle that has pretty much no computer. you pretty much have to take everything off one and put it on the other.

Ok, I'm tryin to put the 4.0 in the 84 ranger I have all the wireing but the ecu... I want to know where I have to move the motor mount... Also how do I get the psi up in the fuel system because Im going efi. I'm having a guy help me do the swap.... How will the harness mount up on the firewall for the key and all that inside power in the cab?

Thanks post me some pics if anyone has them thanks!

just got the motor... hopefully i can get started on it soon... anyone know of anything that might make it go faster?

how do you get AC in a truck with no AC?

Telling you right now. This is not going to be an easy project, by any stretch of the word. If the Tech library stuff was too complicated to understand, this project is not for you.

Converting an old carberated truck into an EFI truck, is no easy task. All the wiring from your original truck is pretty much going to be scrapped, you'll need the fuel pump from the donor vehicle, and in your case probably the tank as well. Basically the ENTIRE fuel system from the donor vehicle. The dash might even need changed out if you want properly working gauges.

If by "go faster" you mean pull more power from the engine.... for the 4.0L theres very little, unless you go forced induction (I.E. Supercharger or Turbo Charged). With both styles of forced induction, its going to be real pricey, and/or likely alot of custom work.

when i said go faster i ment the swap... what would make it go by faster...

i have the motor, and harness... and all the pumps and all that good jazz... all i need is a ECU and the high output fuel pump...

Yeah, tha's all you need. :annoyed:

are the 4.0s the one that get cracked heads or are the 2.9's? how long do the 4.0's last? thanks

Did you get the trans and everything as well?

no i was gonna run the factory AL4D till summer because i cant get to a hoist till then... the one i can use has a jeep on it gettin a lift put in and the guy is takin his sweet old time... so when i did it i was gonna get a newer one and then the 04+ clutch because i heard on another site them work really well...

You actually think you're going to have this done before summer?

Your truck didn't come from the factory with an A4LD.

i got it with a A4LD.. its a 4 speed with OD.... and it also have a 2.8 carb...
i dont know all the codenames and all the short cuts with the rangers like you do... im kinda new to the fords and trucks... i know alot about atvs... so you kinda have to break it down for me... i read on the 98 i have to get the same harness as the ECU... how do i tell if its a 98 or a 97? i have a plastic like intake... where i've seen a metal or alum. intake on others...
