I have a 99 4X4 xtend cab with the 4.0. 134K mi

I've always done oil changes at 4k and about the 70K mark I started doing the tranny fluid every other oil change or so.

So I just did it and now I have a clanky rattling sound while in gear (fwd & Rev).

I drained the pan and replaced the filter and added 3 qts of mercV and about 9-12 oz of lucas tranny fix. Which is the first Time I used it with a fluid change. I've always just added a little hear and there.

It shifts nice and feels pretty responsive, I'm just scared of that noise. I'm pretty sure It's coming from the tranny. I didn't have anyone put it in gear so I can go under it and pin point the sound yet.

I also did a oil change and added lucas leak stop to my engine oil. Could it be lifters banging around? But then again the noise is only when in gear?

Wow, I really stumped the ranger station with this one huh? I think my flywheel might be cracked? I don't know? I think it's time to buy myself a nice tundra!

Does it sound like rocks rolling around in a can?

Kinda like rocks in a tumbler if you could imagine that. But yeah kinda like a can too.

its a long shot, but you can pull the starter out and check the torque converter nuts and see some of the flywheel to see if you see any cracks.

That's exactly what my father told me to do. (He's a big diesel tech)

After looking at where the starter is located, the only question I have is how do I access the hole after the starter is removed? A flashlight and inspection mirror? I don't think I can fit my big heat up in there to look straight in there. Also what and how should I look for something.

Obviously a crack is a crack and something broke is just that. But can I feel play and what about loosen bolts? Could I feel them and or see them?

Also is there fluid in that area when I remove the starter?

you can access the nuts on the torque converter thru the hole the starter uses, its not big, but it works, you're gonna have to use a pry bar or screwdriver to rotate the flywheel to get to the nuts, you'll see them, if i remember correctly, you need 14mm wrench or socket for the starter mounting bolts, and the flywheel to torque converter nuts are 12 or 13

i'm not too familiar with your year setup, but whats the chances you knocked a cat heat shield loose while you were under there? i know the newer models, and my g/f's explorer has a cat right under the trans pan

Definately check the nuts to see of they are loose. If that is not it the you either have a bad convetor or a bad front pump.

bad pump huh? Didn't think of that. Any specific reasosns why those pumps go or just 134k miles?

Would overfilling the tranny cause any of these issues? I did put the recommended 3 qts plus the 9-12 ozs of lucas trans fix.

134K on a A4LD/4R44E/4R55E/5R55E is about the life span. More than likely you have a veain broke off inside the torque convertor.

checked hot and cold

hot was at the top of the crosshatched area. I didn't think that was overboard. Maybe I'm wrong?

hey i noticed in your details you have a rear locker, are you sure its not going bad and ratcheting constantly?

If you're directly under the truck while someone is in with it in gear and has it braked you here it the loudest in the bellhousing area. I don't think it can be the locker due to the fact it's not even spinning. It actully does it in part too just not as loud as when it's in a gear.
